The 63rd edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona has concluded with Porsche as the main highlight, achieving a remarkable performance in the GTP category. The competition, which marks the start of the 2025 IMSA SportsCar Championship calendar, was characterized by constant position changes and variable conditions that influenced the results.
GTP Category: Porsche closes with a tight finish
The Porsche #7 of the Porsche Penske Motorsport team, driven by Felipe Nasr in the final moments, secured the victory after completing 781 laps at the Daytona circuit. Nasr managed to surpass his teammate Matt Campbell, driving the Porsche #6, in a decisive move in the final laps. Meanwhile, the Acura #60 of Meyer Shank Racing moved into second place after a nighttime recovery, pushing the Porsche #6 to third position.
BMW delivered a consistent performance with the #24, but various issues, including minor errors and a penalty, left them in fourth place. Meanwhile, the Cadillac #10 of Wayne Taylor Racing, which had led significant portions of the race, faced technical complications and penalties that kept it off the podium.
LMP2
Tower Motorsports claimed victory in this category with the Oreca #8, driven by Sebastien Bourdais, who efficiently managed the pit stops and race pace. United Autosports, with their Oreca #22, secured second place, while Riley Motorsports completed the podium with the Oreca #74.
GTD PRO
The Ford Mustang GT3 #65, driven by Dennis Olsen, led its class and secured first place in GTD PRO. The Chevrolet Corvette #3 and Ford Mustang #64 rounded out the podium, showcasing the role of American brands in this edition.
GTD
The Chevrolet Corvette #13, driven by Matthew Bell, led the GTD category, maintaining the lead until the end of the race. It was followed by the Porsche 911 #120 and the Aston Martin #27, who had an intense battle for the remaining podium spots.
Withdrawals and setbacks
The debut of the Lamborghini SC63 in the GTP category ended abruptly after just 34 laps due to water pressure issues.
The Cadillac #40 of Wayne Taylor Racing suffered severe damage after a nighttime incident, leaving the competition.
The Acura #93 and BMW #25 faced mechanical failures that significantly delayed them, while a multi-car crash involved several cars from the LMP2 and GTD PRO categories.
The 2025 edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona provided a clear outlook on the potential of the teams for the rest of the IMSA SportsCar Championship season. Porsche confirmed its strength in endurance racing, although its direct competitors like Acura, BMW, and Cadillac remain serious contenders for the upcoming rounds of the championship.
