Red Bull Racing and Sergio Pérez have officially confirmed their separation at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season. This decision, made by mutual agreement, comes after a challenging campaign for the Mexican driver, who finished eighth in the Drivers' Championship and experienced a decline in performance.

A terminated contract

Although Pérez had signed a contract extension in June 2024 through 2026, the lack of consistent results led the team to reconsider his continuation. After negotiations that began following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, both parties reached an agreement to end their working relationship.

The Mexican driver, who joined the team in 2021, secured five victories and 29 podiums with Red Bull. Among his key contributions was his support for Max Verstappen's first title in 2021 and his significant role in the Constructors' Championship in 2022.

Red Bull's replacement

The seat left by Pérez will be contested among the current drivers in Red Bull's junior program. Liam Lawson, a promising young driver from New Zealand, appears to be the leading candidate due to his performance in the 11 races he contested between 2023 and 2024 as a substitute. However, Yuki Tsunoda remains a contender, supported by his experience and competitive results during the post-season tests in Abu Dhabi.

Red Bull has yet to make a final announcement, but Lawson is expected to be chosen due to his development potential and consistency.

End of an era

In his farewell statement, Sergio Pérez thanked the team and fans for their support during his time at Red Bull. "Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience," said the Mexican, who also highlighted the achievements accomplished with the team. With 281 Formula 1 races under his belt, Pérez leaves behind an important legacy and a career that may continue in other motorsport categories.

The Mexican driver's future remains uncertain, but his departure from Red Bull marks the end of a significant chapter in his professional career.
