Kevin Magnussen, after a decade in Formula 1, has decided to embark on a new journey. The Danish driver will join the BMW M Motorsport team as part of its LMDh program, driving the M Hybrid V8 starting in the 2025 season.
BMW has placed its trust in his experience, not only in single-seaters but also in endurance racing. Back in 2021, Magnussen completed a full season with the Cadillac DPi-V.R of Chip Ganassi Racing in the IMSA championship, achieving a victory in Detroit alongside Renger van der Zande, as well as participating in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Magnussen's Addition: A Key Asset for BMW
The announcement of Magnussen's addition came just before his final appearance in Formula 1. Although the exact details of the races he will compete in have not been specified, BMW's LMDh program is active in both the World Endurance Championship and the IMSA series.
Andreas Roos, head of BMW M Motorsport, noted that Magnussen's previous experience with sports prototypes will be essential for his adaptation to the BMW M Hybrid V8, a car that will compete in the world's most prestigious endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "We are thrilled to welcome Kevin Magnussen to the BMW family. His talent and career trajectory make him a valuable addition to our LMDh project," said Roos.
A New Chapter for Magnussen
Magnussen, in turn, expressed his excitement about the challenge of joining the world of endurance racing with BMW. "After ten years in Formula 1, it's exciting to start this new chapter in my career. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent BMW in some of the most iconic races on the calendar and look forward to starting preparations for the 2025 season," the driver commented.
BMW's Strategy in Endurance Racing
BMW M Motorsport has been developing its LMDh program with the goal of competing at the highest level in endurance championships. The BMW M Hybrid V8 represents one of the brand's most serious efforts to challenge other manufacturers at iconic events such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans. With Magnussen's arrival, BMW strengthens its lineup with proven talent in both single-seaters and sports prototypes. The full driver roster for the 2025 season will be announced at a later date.
