Lamborghini has confirmed that it will stop its participation in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the end of the 2024 season. The decision affects the SC63 LMDh prototype in the Hypercar category and the Huracán GT3 EVO2 in LMGT3. With this, Lamborghini joins Vanwall and Isotta Fraschini, who have also decided not to continue in the championship.
Impact of the Hypercar regulation changes
The WEC will implement a requirement that forces manufacturers to field two cars in the Hypercar category starting in 2025. This change was decisive for Lamborghini, which in 2024 competed with a single prototype operated by Iron Lynx. The new regulation does not align with the brand's current plans, so it is not listed in the 2025 entry list, which shows a reduction in the number of participants.
Lamborghini’s plan for 2025
In 2025, Lamborghini will focus its resources on the development of the SC63 LMDh through its participation in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the United States, with a program that includes endurance races like the 12 Hours of Sebring. Additionally, the brand will dedicate efforts to the development of the Temerario GT3, a model that will undergo testing throughout the year and will be available to customers in 2026.
WEC 2025 grid
With the departure of Lamborghini and Isotta Fraschini, the Hypercar category will feature 37 cars in 2025. Among the new participants is Aston Martin with its Valkyrie AMR-LMH. Meanwhile, Toyota, Ferrari, and Porsche will continue with full programs. In LMGT3, Iron Lynx will replace Lamborghini with Mercedes-AMG GT3 models, and teams like Racing Spirit of Leman and Heart of Racing will expand Aston Martin's representation.
Possibility of return
Although Lamborghini is stopping its participation in the WEC, the brand does not rule out returning in the future. For now, it will focus on strengthening its presence in IMSA and advancing the development of new projects.
