The BWT Alpine Formula 1 team has confirmed that it will become a customer of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains and Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix starting in the 2026 season, coinciding with the implementation of the category's new regulations. This multi-year agreement will allow Alpine to receive both power units and transmissions from Mercedes from 2026 until at least 2030.
The decision stems from the strategy of Renault, Alpine's parent company, to cease internal engine development at its Viry-Châtillon factory and opt for an alliance with Mercedes. After months of speculation, the partnership has been formalized, involving Renault CEO Luca de Meo and his advisor Flavio Briatore, in an effort to enhance Alpine's competitiveness.
The integration of Mercedes transmissions, in addition to power units, aims to optimize the adaptation of German components to the 2026 Alpine chassis. This collaboration represents a significant shift for the Enstone plant, whose main priority will be to maximize synergy with Mercedes technology, while not ruling out the possibility of resuming internal transmission development starting in 2027.
The team is currently in a period of adjustment following internal reforms led by Briatore, who described these decisions as a "necessary purge" to avoid compromising 2025 plans. Oliver Oakes, the team's director, explained that the major changes will take place in preparation for the 2026 regulations. According to Oakes, the goal is to proceed meticulously to ensure appropriate decision-making, fostering trust and stability among team members.
With Alpine's incorporation as a customer, Mercedes will maintain engine supply to four teams in the new regulatory era: Mercedes, McLaren, Williams, and now Alpine. This move coincides with Aston Martin's departure from using Mercedes engines as it partners with Honda starting in 2026.
The Alpine team remains focused on its objectives for 2024 and 2025, while already planning the effective integration of Mercedes components to ensure a qualitative leap for the 2026 season and beyond.
