The announcement of Sauber's lineup for 2025 has reshaped the Formula 1 driver market. The Swiss team, set to become Audi's official factory team in 2026, confirmed the signing of Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, the current leader of the Formula 2 championship. Bortoleto will join experienced Nico Hülkenberg, forming a pairing aimed at balancing youth and experience.
A new chapter for Sauber and Audi
The Brazilian driver, born in São Paulo, has impressed with his consistency and achievements in the lower categories. Following an outstanding debut season in Formula 3 in 2023, Bortoleto quickly rose to lead Formula 2. At just 20 years old, his move to the Sauber team marks a key milestone in his career and strengthens Audi's commitment to its long-term Formula 1 project.
Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi AG, emphasized the importance of bringing in a young driver with proven talent, highlighting the brand's forward-looking strategy. Meanwhile, Mattia Binotto, Sauber's current Chief Operating and Technical Officer, noted that Bortoleto has already demonstrated the skills needed to succeed, ensuring that the mix of experience and youth with Hülkenberg will position the team strongly for its transition to Audi.
Bortoleto's addition comes at a transitional time for Sauber. Valtteri Bottas, who will leave the team at the end of the 2024 season, is close to an agreement to return to Mercedes as a reserve driver. Bottas's departure is a result of the team's restructuring efforts, which have included changes in leadership and competitive strategy. Additionally, the arrival of Johnathan Wheatley, former Red Bull director, as team principal starting in 2025, reflects the team's ambitious goals.
For Bortoleto, joining Sauber is more than just a step forward; it represents the opportunity to grow alongside an ambitious project undergoing significant evolution. Meanwhile, Hülkenberg, confirmed since April, will serve as a valuable mentor for the young Brazilian as both drivers work towards building the future Audi factory team at the pinnacle of motorsport.
