The first free practice session of the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix brought several surprises, with multiple rookie drivers participating. Standout performances came from Pato O'Ward, Oliver Bearman, Robert Shwartzman, Felipe Drugovich, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who took the opportunity to drive in Formula 1 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Why did these drivers participate?
The rookies present in FP1 of the Mexican Grand Prix were part of a mandatory Formula 1 program, which requires each team to provide at least two opportunities during the season to drivers who are not regulars on the grid. This regulation aims to give young talents and reserve drivers a chance to gain experience in a real race environment, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the cars and the demands of the series.
Pato O'Ward, Oliver Bearman, Robert Shwartzman, Felipe Drugovich, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli are part of this group of drivers aiming to secure a spot in the top category of motorsport, and these practice sessions are crucial for them to showcase their potential and gain valuable mileage behind the wheel.
O'Ward's return to Formula 1
The Mexican driver Pato O'Ward was back in action in Formula 1, driving Lando Norris's McLaren. He finished in 13th position with a time of 1'19.295, about three-tenths off Oscar Piastri's sixth-place time. This session allowed him to gain experience on his home circuit and in front of his local fans.
Bearman and his incident with Albon
Oliver Bearman, driving a Ferrari, had a challenging session that ended in an accident with Alex Albon. While Bearman was completing a slow lap, Albon lost control of his car and crashed into the Ferrari and the barriers. Despite the incident, Bearman managed to record a time of 1'21.256 before the crash.
Shwartzman's discreet performance
Robert Shwartzman, who drove the Sauber F1, completed 18 laps and posted a time of 1'19.988, placing him 19th overall. His performance was steady, with no incidents, allowing the team to gather data on the car's behavior. Although his times weren't the fastest, he fulfilled his development role for the team.
Drugovich adapting to Aston Martin
Felipe Drugovich, driving an Aston Martin, finished the session in 18th place with a time of 1'19.819. Although his participation was limited to 17 laps, the Brazilian driver continues to gain valuable experience in the series.
Antonelli's stint with Mercedes
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a young Mercedes prospect, had the opportunity to take over Lewis Hamilton's car, finishing in 12th place with a time of 1'19.200. Antonelli showed consistency in his laps, leaving a positive impression on the team.
