Lando Norris won the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, beating Max Verstappen by 21 seconds. This victory allows the British driver to reduce the championship gap to 52 points. Despite two light touches with the wall, Norris controlled the race and maintained his lead.
From the start, Norris defended his position off the line, preventing Verstappen from passing. As the race progressed, Norris built a gap of more than one second, preventing the Dutchman from using DRS to attack. By lap 11, Norris had already established a considerable lead, which he continued to extend in the following laps.
Piastri completes the podium
Oscar Piastri also had a strong performance, finishing third and securing a podium for McLaren. After a strategy that allowed him to extend his stint on medium tires, the Australian driver overtook the Mercedes cars of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Although the goal was to close in on Verstappen, the Red Bull driver's pace was too strong to threaten second place.
Battle between Russell and Leclerc
George Russell finished fourth, holding off pressure from Charles Leclerc in the final laps. The Mercedes driver took advantage of a strategy to pass Hamilton but could not keep up with Piastri. Leclerc, on the other hand, advanced after an early pit stop from his teammate Carlos Sainz, who finished seventh.
Hamilton, Alonso, and Pérez complete the points
Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, followed by Fernando Alonso in eighth. Nico Hulkenberg took ninth, keeping Sergio Pérez behind him, who rounded out the top 10. The Mexican driver reported traction issues, which made it difficult for him to pass the Haas driver.
Franco Colapinto, driving for Williams, finished 11th, just a second and a half behind Pérez.
Race retirements
Kevin Magnussen and Alex Albon were the only drivers to retire from the race. Magnussen suffered from a puncture after a brush with the wall, while Albon retired due to an overheating engine.
