Porsche Penske Motorsport team, with André Lotterer, Kévin Estre, and Laurens Vanthoor at the helm, is close to securing the WEC 2024 championship after winning the 6 Hours of Fuji. The 35-point advantage they now have, with only one round remaining, puts them in a favorable position for the final race in Bahrain.
The Porsche #6 showed strong performance from the start, overtaking
in the early laps. Laurens Vanthoor had a fast start, overtaking the Toyotas and positioning himself in the top spots. Thanks to effective strategic decisions in the pits, the team remained in control of the race, avoiding major issues and managing the safety car periods well.Despite the attempts from Nicklas Nielsen in the Ferrari #50, Porsche stayed strong and managed the race without relinquishing its lead.
Toyota out of options at home
Toyota, which had high expectations at its home circuit, did not achieve the expected results. The Toyota #7, driven by Kamui Kobayashi and his team, retired after an incident on lap 163. This ended their chances of fighting for the drivers' championship.
The Toyota #8 also had a complicated race, dropping to tenth position after a penalty in the final laps.
BMW and Alpine stand out in the race
The BMW M Team WRT surprised by securing second place in the race, achieving one of their best results of the year. The team, which had a discreet season, took advantage of the opportunities and climbed to the podium.
Mick Schumacher, driving the Alpine #36, also had a solid performance, securing third place after overtaking several competitors in the final laps.
Ferrari leads in LMGT3
In the LMGT3 category, Ferrari had a strong performance with its 296 LMGT3. The VISTA AF Corse team, composed of Thomas Flohr, Francesco Castellacci, and Davide Rigon, successfully managed the difficulties of the Fuji track. Despite previous issues in the season, the team completed a double stint that brought them the victory in their category.
Flohr, Castellacci, and Rigon managed the tires and strategy efficiently, achieving a positive result for Ferrari in this category.
Final round in Bahrain
With only one race remaining, the Porsche team needs just an eighth place finish in the 8 Hours of Bahrain to secure the WEC 2024 championship. Toyota, on the other hand, will need a series of very favorable results to stay in the fight.
