Charles Leclerc took pole position for Ferrari at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Sergio Pérez, of Red Bull, secured fourth place, while Lando Norris, one of the title contenders, was eliminated in Q1.

Qualifying in Baku

Leclerc was the fastest in qualifying, with Oscar Piastri of McLaren in second, three-tenths behind. Carlos Sainz, also with Ferrari, finished third. Sergio Pérez delivered a strong performance to secure fourth place, outpacing his teammate Max Verstappen for the first time this season.

George Russell of Mercedes finished fifth, between the two Red Bulls. Verstappen had issues in turn 16 and ended up sixth. Lewis Hamilton was seventh with Mercedes, followed by Fernando Alonso, who finished eighth.

Rookie Franco Colapinto, in his second race with Williams, impressed by qualifying ninth, ahead of his teammate Alex Albon, who finished tenth after a pit incident involving a fan left connected that affected his final lap.

Problems for Norris and Ocon

Lando Norris was one of the surprises as he was knocked out in Q1. An error in turn 16, combined with a possible yellow flag for Esteban Ocon's car, prevented the British driver from completing a fast lap, and he was eliminated, starting from 17th place.

Ocon, meanwhile, hit the wall during his fast lap and finished last, adding to a difficult weekend.
