Audi has secured Jonathan Wheatley as Team Principal for its future Formula 1 team, joining Mattia Binotto in the management of Sauber Motorsport AG. Wheatley, with a broad trajectory in motorsport, will join Audi to strengthen its ambitious project in the top category of motorsport.
Experience and Leadership in Audi F1
Jonathan Wheatley, known for his key role in Red Bull Racing's successes, will take on the responsibility of Team Principal and management spokesperson. Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi, expressed his satisfaction with Wheatley's incorporation: “Jonathan has been a fundamental part of numerous successes in Formula 1. His experience will be crucial for our entry into the category.”
Wheatley began his Formula 1 career with Benetton in the 1990s, rising to chief mechanic. He later joined Red Bull Racing as Sporting Director, contributing to six constructors' titles and seven drivers' championships.
Alongside Mattia Binotto, who will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Wheatley will lead the management team of Sauber Motorsport AG. Binotto will be responsible for operational management and technical development in Hinwil, as well as being the technical liaison with Audi Formula Racing GmbH. Both will report directly to Gernot Döllner.
By July 2025, Wheatley will fully integrate as Team Principal of Audi F1, focusing on team performance and event management. His incorporation is part of the management restructuring following Audi's full acquisition of Sauber. “With Jonathan and Mattia, we have taken a decisive step towards our entry into Formula 1,” stated Döllner.
Wheatley commented on his new role: “I am proud to have been part of Red Bull Racing's success and excited about the challenge of leading Audi's team in Formula 1. Working with Mattia will be an enriching experience.” Binotto added: “I have known Jonathan for years and trust in his experience. We are ready to lead the team to success in 2026.”
