Audi is moving forward with its plan to enter Formula 1. Starting August 1, 2024, Mattia Binotto, known for his extensive career at Ferrari, will take the reins of the Audi team in Formula 1 as Chief Operating and Technical Officer at Sauber Motorsport AG.
Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG, commented on Binotto's hiring: "With his extensive experience in Formula 1, Binotto will be a crucial addition to our project." Binotto, with a background in mechanical engineering from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), began his career at Ferrari in 1995 and has held multiple important roles within the team.
Binotto played a key role in the development of engines and hybrid systems at Ferrari, and his leadership was vital during his time as team principal. In his new role at Audi, Binotto will manage the team's operations and sporting success, reporting directly to the board of Sauber Motorsport AG.
Reorganization at Audi F1
Binotto's arrival comes as part of a reorganization of the control structure of the Audi Formula 1 team. Oliver Hoffmann and Andreas Seidl, who previously led the project, will step down in this new phase. Döllner, who will become chairman of the board of Sauber Motorsport AG, emphasized the importance of establishing clear and efficient management structures for success in Formula 1.
This reorganization aims to ensure the independence and quick decision-making ability of the Audi F1 team. "We want the team to operate independently and quickly," added Döllner.

With over 25 years in Formula 1, Mattia Binotto has had a distinguished career at Ferrari. He started as a test engineer and rose to head of engine engineers and head of the engine and KERS department.
