Piastri, who started from second position, took the lead from the beginning, overtaking Norris in the first corner. During the first part of the race, Piastri maintained a good pace, opening a considerable gap over his teammate. McLaren's strategy was clear from the start: secure a dominant position by protecting their drivers from possible attacks from behind.
However, complications arose when Norris, after an earlier pit stop, began to close the gap with Piastri. Despite team orders, Norris was reluctant to give up his leading position. Only after several radio communications, and with increasing firmness in the team's orders, did Norris finally allow Piastri to retake the lead on lap 68.
Tension in the McLaren Team
Piastri's performance was remarkable, remaining calm under pressure and demonstrating a great ability to manage the team's internal dynamics. His victory makes him one of the youngest winners in F1 history and the first born in the 21st century to achieve it.
On the other hand, Lando Norris expressed his frustration with the team's decision to swap positions. Although he understood the strategy, it was not easy for the Briton to accept the order, as he felt he had a good pace and a chance to win. This internal tension could have repercussions in the upcoming races, where team management will be crucial.
Performance of Other Drivers
Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third place, beating Max Verstappen who had a challenging race. Verstappen, who initially showed good pace, was hindered by strategic decisions and defensive maneuvers from his rivals. Hamilton, for his part, took advantage of opportunities and managed to keep the Red Bull driver at bay.
Verstappen, frustrated by the decision to let Norris pass after going off track at the first corner, complained about the strategy that allowed Hamilton to overtake him. Although he managed to recover ground and press Hamilton, an aggressive overtaking attempt at the first corner left him out of the podium battle, allowing Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to close in.
Leclerc finished in fourth place, capitalizing on Verstappen's mistakes and Ferrari's strategy. Sainz, despite efforts to press Verstappen, did not have enough pace to challenge the Dutch driver and finished in fifth place.
Sergio Pérez, after an accident in Q1, managed to recover and finish seventh with a hard tire strategy, keeping George Russell, who finished eighth, at bay. Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll completed the top ten, with Stroll outperforming his teammate Fernando Alonso.
Championship Impact
With this victory, McLaren achieves a valuable 1-2, which it had not achieved since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. The 43 points obtained in Budapest allow the team to advance to second place in the constructors' standings, just behind Red Bull. This result boosts McLaren's confidence for future competitions and strengthens their position as a contender in the championship.
Drivers' Statements
Oscar Piastri thanked the team and highlighted the importance of his victory. "It is a very special day for me. This is the dream of any driver, to be on top of the podium in F1. I thank McLaren for this opportunity and for all the work we have done together."
Lando Norris, although frustrated by the situation, recognized the value of his teammate and the importance of continuing to work as a team. "It was a complicated race and team orders are always difficult to accept, but Oscar did a great job. We will continue working together to stay competitive."
Next Stop: Spa-Francorchamps
