The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix featured a race with a lot of action and significant changes. From the first lap, Max Verstappen held the first position, while Charles Leclerc faced problems after a contact that forced him to change the front wing.
In the early laps, the battle between Mercedes drivers Hamilton and Russell for the third place was intense. Carlos Sainz managed to overtake Hamilton, securing the fourth position, while Oscar Piastri passed Sergio Pérez, showing his competitive ability.
Pit stops began early, with drivers like Hulkenberg and Alonso pitting on lap 11. Leclerc, who couldn't move up from 19th place, had to pit again on lap 17. Ocon and Bottas also made strategic stops on lap 20.
Hamilton and Pérez pitted on lap 22, followed by leaders Verstappen and Norris on lap 24. On this lap, Alonso received a 10-second penalty for an accident with Zhou at turn 3. Hamilton received a 5-second penalty for crossing the pit entry line, and later, Pérez was penalized for speeding in the pits.
The race changed drastically in the final laps. Norris overtook Verstappen for the first position but had to return it after going off track. On lap 64, a contact between Verstappen and Norris resulted in both drivers losing their rear tires, and Russell inherited the first position.
Norris was forced to retire due to the damage, and Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for the incident. Russell stayed firm and crossed the finish line in first place, followed by Piastri and Sainz, achieving Mercedes' first victory since Brazil 2022.
