On May 10, 2024, the first rolling prototype of the Alpine Alpenglow, known as Hy4, was presented at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit. This prototype will participate in demonstrations at the 92nd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14 and 15, 2024.
Technology and Performance
The Alpine Alpenglow Hy4, based on the concept presented at the 2022 Paris Motor Show, demonstrates that it is possible to combine performance and sustainable development. This prototype, equipped with a 4-cylinder hydrogen combustion engine, represents a new direction in racing and sports car engine technology. Alpine is working on developing an all-new V6 engine, specifically designed to run on hydrogen, which will be unveiled in the coming months.
Futuristic Design
The Hy4 features a refined design that anticipates the future of hypercars. It includes a two-seater cockpit, a racing steering wheel, and new wheels that evoke speed. These elements indicate the brand's stylistic evolution and commitment to performance and sustainability.
Commitment to Decarbonization
Alpine is committed to environmental innovation in motorsport. The hydrogen combustion engine offers a way to decarbonize racing and sports cars. Renault Group, Alpine's parent company, also bets on hydrogen through HYVIA, a joint venture with Plug Power, which develops light commercial vehicles with fuel cells and hydrogen refueling solutions.
Alpine and the Future of Motorsport
The Alpine Alpenglow Hy4 is not just a concept but a reality on the tracks. With its public debut at Spa-Francorchamps and Le Mans, Alpine shows how hydrogen can maintain the traditional sensations of a combustion engine in the context of sustainability. Bruno Famin, Vice President of Alpine Motorsports, highlights the potential of hydrogen for decarbonizing future generations of endurance and Formula 1 cars, especially with liquid storage for greater compactness and performance.
