The Formula 1 team Williams has confirmed the extension of Alex Albon's contract until 2026, entering the new era of regulations.
Albon's previous contract with Williams was set to end in 2025, but his excellent performance in 2023 made him a key player for the team. At 28 years old, Albon has decided to commit to Williams beyond 2026, signing a multi-year contract.
"I am very happy to continue with Williams Racing and to work with such a talented and dedicated team," said Albon. "Although the start of the year has been difficult, since joining Williams we have made significant progress and I have seen the great changes happening to bring us back to the front of the grid."
Team principal James Vowles expressed his satisfaction in securing his lead driver's future while continuing to build the foundation for Williams' return to competitiveness.
"We are delighted to secure Alex's long-term future with Williams Racing," said Vowles. "He has exceptional talent and his dedication to the team is a great vote of confidence in our path towards competitiveness."
Albon joined Williams in 2022 after a year out of the series following the loss of his Red Bull seat. Since then, he quickly established his leadership in the team. In 2023, Albon managed to bring Williams to seventh place in the constructors' championship, scoring 27 of the team's 28 points.
Despite not scoring points in 2024 due to a difficult start, Albon remains confident in Vowles' long-term plans to improve the team. "It is true that we haven't started the year as we wanted," said Albon. "We haven't had the pace and have been delayed with updates. However, I firmly believe in the team and in James' leadership to move us forward."
