Formula 1 plans to continue in Mexico after 2025

Domenicali hopes to renew the contract with the Mexican Grand Prix

The Mexico City Grand Prix has a contract with Formula 1 until 2025. However, Stefano Domenicali, the general director of the category, is already in negotiations with the promoter CIE to extend the agreement.

The event returned to Mexico in 2015 with the name "Mexico Grand Prix" and had the backing of the federal government. With the change of administration, the name was changed to "Mexico City Grand Prix," thanks to the financial support of a private trust and negotiations with then-governor Claudia Sheinbaum.

During the Miami Grand Prix, Domenicali indicated that the future of the Mexico GP depends on the duration of the new agreement. "Our goal is to extend the contract as much as we can," he noted. "They are doing an excellent job, and we will close the new deal this year. We will soon announce how many more years we will be in Mexico."

The latest agreement was for three years, covering the period from 2023 to 2025, which represents the longest stay of Formula 1 in Mexico, after the first stages in the 1960s-1970s and 1980s-1990s.

On the other hand, the Mexican driver Sergio Pérez has expressed his desire to stay in Formula 1 for at least three to four more years, as he believes he still has a lot to offer in the sport. This aligns with Domenicali's perspective of establishing long-term contracts, such as the one expected for the Mexico GP.

Formula 1 has 24 races planned for the 2024 season, including the Mexico City Grand Prix, which will be held on October 27 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
