Proposed Changes to the F1 Points Structure for 2025

F1 teams consider extending points to twelfth place to improve competitiveness

The Formula 1 could see a significant change in its points structure starting from the 2025 season, with a proposal aiming to extend the points allocation up to the twelfth position. The modification aims to provide scoring opportunities to more teams, especially those struggling in the midfield.

Currently, only the top ten drivers in each race receive points, often leaving teams with fewer resources unrewarded, despite delivering solid performances. This situation has sparked debates among teams and sport organizers, with many supporting a more equitable redistribution of points.

The proposal under discussion will not alter the points awarded to the top seven positions but will introduce points for positions eight through twelve. Additionally, points for the fastest lap will be extended up to the twelfth position, rather than being limited to the top ten as it currently stands.

Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur, has expressed support for the initiative, highlighting that changing the structure could alleviate some of the frustrations experienced by teams finishing just outside the top ten. Similarly, Red Bull's Christian Horner has indicated that while the final decision requires detailed analysis, the idea has the potential to balance the competition.

Red Bull's Laurent Mekies has also voiced support, noting that the change could enhance perception and motivation within the sport, making every position worth fighting for. Meanwhile, Haas' Ayao Komatsu has commented that the change would not only benefit the teams but also make the sport more appealing to fans.

For the new points structure to be approved, it needs the backing of at least five teams and F1 authorities, such as the FIA and FOM. Final details will be discussed in an upcoming meeting of the F1 Commission, where it is expected that the majority of teams will show their support for the proposal.
