The Ford Hypercar's engine completes virtual laps around La Sarthe

The first track tests will begin in a few days

The 5.4-liter Coyote V8 from the Ford Hypercar is already completing simulated laps of the La Sarthe circuit on a dynamometer in Dearborn, Michigan. The test cell where the engine reproduces every gear change, every braking zone, and every full-throttle acceleration of the French track is just a few meters from where Ford developed the GT40 over sixty years ago. The program that will return the manufacturer to the WEC in 2027 is days away from its first on-track test, in France, and Ford has just shown how it trains the engine without having yet left home.

Christian Hertrich, chief powertrain engineer at Ford Racing, explained that the dynamometer allows loading the full Le Mans program, with the real engine speeds for each corner, and listening to the naturally aspirated V8 rev to 9,000 rpm on the simulated straights. "The engine doesn't know the difference," he wrote, but the ear certainly does. The simulation is the step before the upcoming physical test, and Ford has turned it into a piece of communication that reveals the real status of the project.

Ford's note also covers the parallel work being done at the North Carolina Technology Center, where the Hypercar drivers are already spending hours on the chassis simulator testing the seat, driving position, and controls before turning a single real lap. This fine-tuning work, ahead of on-track testing, aims to ensure that when the drivers get into the car in France, there are no surprises. Ford takes this methodology from other racing programs and also, according to Hertrich, from the first project that applied this logic, the GT40 of the 1960s.

Last week, Ford confirmed that the naturally aspirated Coyote V8 had been fired up for the first time inside the chassis built by ORECA, coupled with the category's hybrid system. Dan Sayers, the program director, said then that the first start validated the operation of the complete powertrain. On-track testing will begin in August at various European circuits, and drivers Logan Sargeant, Mike Rockenfeller, Sebastian Priaulx, Matt Campbell, Nick Yelloly, and Tom Blomqvist will take turns in the development sessions.

Ford chose to develop the engine in-house, in Michigan, to maintain design control and accelerate technology transfer to its road vehicles. The naturally aspirated Coyote V8 places the prototype in a select group within the WEC, alongside the Cadillac V-Series.R and the Aston Martin Valkyrie. ORECA was responsible for the chassis, the same supplier that works with Acura, Alpine, and Genesis. The bodywork and visual identity will be Ford's own.

The preparation program included a full season in the European Le Mans Series with an LMP2 to train the engineers and mechanics who will be part of the Hypercar team. Priaulx and Rockenfeller are competing in that category this year, while Sargeant is participating in the 2026 WEC in LMGT3 with Proton Competition. The first on-track test in France is days away, and Ford has made sure to show that the engine already knows what it's like to run at La Sarthe, even though it hasn't yet left Michigan.
