Wayne Taylor Racing Returns to Victory in IMSA

Filipe Albuquerque and Ricky Taylor returned Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing to the top spot in the GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The pair in the number 10 Cadillac won the 6 Hours of Road America, the eighth round of the calendar and the fourth race of the Michelin Endurance Cup, ending more than two years without a win for the team in the top class, since Detroit 2024. The race, which for the first time was run in an extended format at the Wisconsin circuit, was decided in the final ten minutes after an accident between the Porsche 6 of Kevin Estre and the Cadillac 31 of Jack Aitken, the championship leader.

The race had started with Acura at the front thanks to Nick Yelloly's pole, who for the second consecutive year placed the Acura 93 of Meyer Shank Racing in first place on the grid. Yelloly shared the car with Renger van der Zande and both were confident that leading from the front would help avoid the risks of the early laps on a circuit where the six-hour format multiplied the variables. Team mate Tom Blomqvist secured second, leaving the front row to Acura.

The first three hours saw Porsche Penske take control with the two factory 963s that carried historic liveries. Julien Andlauer, in the number 7 he shared with Felipe Nasr, led much of the first half, and the team ran first and second before yellow flags reshuffled the strategy. Sheldon van der Linde, in the BMW 24, had built a lead of over twenty seconds after the second restart, but the third yellow erased that gap, and a short stop for Porsche gave the lead back to Andlauer. The Cadillac 31 of Aitken, who led the championship with a margin of over 200 points before this round, had to fight back after a pit-lane speed infringement and ran several positions behind the leaders.

The second half of the race was a different story. Albuquerque moved up from third and overtook Aitken on a restart with an hour and a half remaining. Shortly before the six hours were up, the Portuguese driver pitted just before a yellow flag closed the pit lane due to an incident in GTD, a move that allowed him to keep track position and face the final restarts without giving up ground. The race ended under caution after Estre and Aitken made contact at the Turn 1 braking zone while fighting for second. The Cadillac 31 hit the wall and the Porsche 6 ended up in the gravel trap at Turn 3. Both were evaluated and cleared at the medical center, but the incident left the top three in limbo and the results subject to review.

The JDC-Miller MotorSports Porsche 963 of Laurin Heinrich, Kaylen Frederick, and Tijmen van der Helm moved up to the second step. The other WTR Cadillac, the number 40 of Jordan Taylor and Louis Deletraz, finished third to complete the team's best weekend in GTP in two seasons. The Acura 93 of Van der Zande and Yelloly ended up fourth, and the Aston Martin 23 of Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis was fifth. The two factory Porsche Penske cars went without a trophy: the 7 of Nasr and Andlauer finished sixth, two laps down, and the 6 of Estre and Laurens Vanthoor was out of the overall top order due to the final accident. Aitken left Wisconsin with only a 108-point lead over Heinrich, who now has the title fight within reach with two races remaining. Heinrich will contest the next round at Indianapolis with JDC-Miller and the Petit Le Mans finale with Porsche Penske.

In LMP2, Inter Europol Competition scored its second consecutive victory following the success at Mosport. Jeremy Clarke, Bijoy Garg, and Tom Dillmann took the Oreca 43 to the top spot, leading 83 of the 149 laps and managing a finish with the last drops of fuel. The Oreca 04 of CrowdStrike Racing by APR, with George Kurtz, Alex Quinn, and Toby Sowery, finished second, leaving Clarke and Dillmann 36 points behind the championship lead of Kurtz and Quinn. TDS Racing, with Tobi Lutke, Mathias Beche, and David Heinemeier Hansson, secured its first top-three finish of the season with the Oreca 11 in third.

Pfaff Motorsports achieved at Road America the first victory for the Lamborghini Temerario GT3 in IMSA. Andrea Caldarelli and Sandy Mitchell shared the number 9 car in GTD PRO and ended a 36-race winless drought for the team, which had not celebrated since Sebring 2023. The Porsche 77 of AO Racing, with Nick Tandy and Harry King, who had started from pole, finished second, and the Corvette 4 of Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg was third. Neil Verhagen and Connor De Phillippi, championship leaders in the BMW 1 of Paul Miller Racing, finished eleventh, so the lead was cut to 15 points over Milner and Catsburg and 31 over Tandy and King.

In GTD, Winward Racing also strung together victories after winning at Mosport. Russell Ward, Philip Ellis, and Indy Dontje took the Mercedes-AMG 57 to its third win of the year and moved to within 24 points of leader Eduardo Barrichello, who finished fifteenth in the Aston Martin 27 of Heart of Racing. The Ferrari 023 of Triarsi Competizione, with Onofrio Triarsi, Kenton Koch, and Robert Megennis, was second, and the Aston Martin 068 of Car Blanche, with Marius Fossard, Valentin Hasse Clot, and Trenton Estep, finished third.

The GT classes will have their own round at the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR from August 21 to 23. The full championship will return from September 18 to 20 at the mixed circuit of Indianapolis for the TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks.
