Lewis Hamilton secured his first Grand Prix victory with Ferrari at the 2026 Spanish GP, the seventh round of the Formula 1 championship held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Briton completed the 66 laps with a 19.5-second advantage over George Russell and 23.7 seconds over Lando Norris, marking an all‑British podium not seen since 1968. The race started with 34 degrees ambient temperature and 40 on the track, conditions that tested tyre management from lap one.
Hamilton started second on used soft tyres, behind Russell, who had taken pole on Saturday with a 1:14.679. Charles Leclerc, who crashed in Q3 without setting a time, started tenth on new mediums and climbed to seventh place at the start. Ferrari planned a three‑stop strategy that began on lap 11 with a switch to hard tyres, a gamble that initially seemed to drop him from the leading group but paid off on lap 40 when Fernando Alonso stopped his Aston Martin on track and triggered a Virtual Safety Car. Hamilton pitted during the neutralisation, changed tyres without losing position, and resumed the race in first place.
By lap 38, Hamilton had already moved to the front by taking advantage of the pit cycle of the Mercedes of Russell and Kimi Antonelli, which put Ferrari first and second momentarily. The cost‑free stop during the Virtual Safety Car gave him the decisive margin. Hamilton extended the gap over Russell with a series of fast laps and managed the rest of the race without trouble until on lap 62 Antonelli, the championship leader arriving in Barcelona with a 25‑point advantage, stopped on track with a mechanical issue and retired. On the same lap, Leclerc retired with a hydraulic failure while running in the points. The two retirements reduced Antonelli's gap at the front of the championship, and Hamilton scored the 25 points with a clear path to the checkered flag.
Russell finished second and Norris third, with Max Verstappen fourth at the wheel of the Red Bull, ahead of Oscar Piastri and Isack Hadjar, who closed out the top six. Alpine achieved its best collective performance of the season with Pierre Gasly seventh and Franco Colapinto eighth, although the Argentine remained under investigation for a yellow‑flag infringement. Racing Bulls placed both drivers in the points with Liam Lawson ninth and Arvid Lindblad tenth, scoring in consecutive races for the second time.
Aston Martin left Barcelona without points after the retirements of Alonso and Lance Stroll. Alonso triggered the Virtual Safety Car that ultimately benefited Hamilton, and Stroll retired on lap 5. Mercedes lost its championship leader with Antonelli's retirement, failing to score for the first time this season, while Russell cut the gap with the 18 points from second place. The reliability of Antonelli's car comes into question just as the season enters its middle stretch.
