Toyota leads the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans at the four‑hour mark, but the consistency of BMW and Cadillac keeps the fight open heading into the night. The gap from the number 8 prototype of Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa to the BMW number 20 is around 30 seconds, a margin that does not fully reflect the equality seen in the stints. The three manufacturers exchanged the lead in the first two hours, and lap times moved within a range of three tenths during the long runs.

Mike Conway brought the Toyota number 7 into the pits on lap 9, and the sister car did the same one lap later to break away from the pit sequence of the other Hypercars. With a clear track, Buemi put together 20 laps on the same set of Michelin medium‑compound tyres and set 3m26.580s, the fastest time so far. The temperature in Sarthe has reached 30 degrees, and tyre wear punishes any excess. Toyota ran consistently in the 3m27s range, but BMW and Cadillac stayed within sight. Jack Aitken passed the BMW number 20 of Sheldon van der Linde at the Ford chicane during the third hour, and when the Cadillac 38 stopped during the fourth round of pit stops, Hartley regained the lead and stretched it to almost 40 seconds. Even so, the two Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA cars are among the top four, and the BMW number 15 of Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marciello and Dries Vanthoor is seventh, a minute and a half behind, still within striking distance.

Michelin introduced a new range of slicks this year with a wider operating window, and most Hypercars did three stints without changing tyres. The soft compound that the French firm has offered for this edition has not yet appeared on track and could alter the order as soon as someone uses it when temperatures drop. No rain is expected overnight in Sarthe, so tyre thermal management on asphalt that will go from 30 degrees to less than 20 will determine who loses the least pace.

The official Ferrari 499Ps had a difficult first part. Antonio Fuoco spun the number 50 after touching the Oreca LMP2 of Richard Verschoor at Tertre Rouge and dropped to ninth. Alessandro Pier Guidi hooked the Oreca 07 number 9 with the Ferrari 51 in the forest esses, and a stop‑and‑go penalty dropped him from sixth to ninth. Alpine is fighting for fifth place with the A424 number 35 of Charles Milesi, although the French Hypercar's top speed does not match the leading trio.

Duqueine leads in LMP2 with the Oreca 30 of Verschoor, Julien Andlauer and Doriane Pin, who took over the car and maintains a 28‑second lead over Forestier Racing. IDEC Sport, the early leader with Job van Uitert, dropped back when Paul Lafargue got in. DKR Engineering lost six laps due to a broken hub on car number 3.

In LMGT3, Jack Hawksworth put the Lexus 78 at the front in the opening stint, and Tom van Rompuy held the gap until Ayhancan Güven pushed in the Porsche 911 of Manthey DK Engineering. A double stint was enough for him to capture the lead near the fifth hour. José María López keeps the Lexus 87 in the fight, and Mattia Drudi holds on with the Aston Martin 27. The defending champions at Manthey lost four laps due to a broken ball joint on the Porsche 92. Peugeot brings up the rear of the Hypercar category with both 9X8s more than three minutes behind; Stoffel Vandoorne admitted the car has no pace, and the team principal had already shown his frustration since practice.

The rain‑free night and the unused soft tyre leave the race open. BMW and Cadillac have proved they can run in clean air at the same pace as Toyota during long stints, and they need the Japanese cars to lose at least one tenth per lap as the asphalt cools. The next report will come at the 12‑hour mark, with half the race already completed and all the cards on the table.
