The two Porsche 963 cars from Penske will race on May 3rd at Laguna Seca with a replica of the design that Dick Barbour Racing used in 1980, when it entered a 935 K3 with the multicolored Apple Computer livery in several events, including Le Mans. The visual scheme is part of the activations that Porsche has scheduled during 2026 for the 75th anniversary of its motorsport division, and it is the third different livery the 963 has used in four IMSA rounds.
Porsche already raced at Sebring on March 21st with Mobil 1 colors and two weeks ago at Long Beach used an Apple Music design. The strategy of constant changes seeks to capitalize on the anniversary year with commercial activations at each round of the calendar. The Laguna Seca livery recalls an episode from 1980, when Apple was barely four years old and a California team brought its logo to European endurance racing in a 935 K3 prepared by Kremer Racing.
The choice of Laguna Seca
Porsche chose this circuit for its location in Northern California, 80 miles from Apple Park in Cupertino. The track has hosted the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in its latest editions, the largest gathering of Porsche fans in North America, where in 2023 they presented the 911 GT3 R rennsport. Urs Kuratle, head of the factory LMDh program, conducted a two-day test at the circuit in April to prepare for the round, which will last 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The #7 of Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr leads the IMSA championship with 755 points. Andlauer, Nasr, and Laurin Heinrich won the two endurance races that opened the season: Daytona and Sebring. Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor will drive the #6, which has 654 points and sits third in the standings. Cadillac with the #31 of Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber, and Frederik Vesti is second, 80 points behind the leader.
