Toyota has unveiled the TR010 Hybrid with aerodynamic updates for the 2026 World Endurance Championship. This is the third major modification Toyota has made to its Hypercar prototype since introducing the LMH specifications in 2021. The TR010 debuts at the 1812 km of Qatar next March.

The prototype incorporates a completely redesigned front end. Official photographs show changes in the front geometry and headlights that adopt the design language of current Toyota production vehicles. Modifications to the front of an LMH prototype typically indicate more extensive aerodynamic work across the entire body.

Toyota made previous updates to the GR010 Hybrid in 2022 and 2023. Those changes included adjustments to tire configuration and improvements in dynamic behavior. It then kept the prototype practically unmodified during 2024 and 2025. The TR010 is the most significant evolution since the introduction of the Hypercar rules.

Visual Change and Historical Reference

The TR010 Hybrid abandons the matte black scheme that Toyota used since 2021. The prototype adopts a red-white-black livery. The scheme recalls the popular livery Toyota used at Le Mans 2025, when the GR010 #7 sported colors evoking the TS020 (GT-One) of 1998-1999 as part of the celebration of Toyota's 40th anniversary at La Sarthe.

That special design on the #7 was well received by fans. Toyota used it only at Le Mans 2025, returning afterward to the usual matte black. The TR010's livery does not exactly replicate that GT-One design, but it incorporates similar elements permanently.

The TS020 (GT-One) is one of Toyota's most remembered prototypes. It competed at Le Mans in 1998 and 1999, achieving pole position in 1999 and finishing second in that edition after a puncture in the final minutes. The GT-One gained popularity by featuring in the first edition of the Gran Turismo video game.

Response to Losing the Title

The TR010 Hybrid update comes after a difficult 2025 season for Toyota. The manufacturer finished second in the constructors' championship, losing the title to Ferrari. This was the first time since 2018 that Toyota did not win the WEC manufacturers' championship.

In 2025, Toyota achieved only one victory: the 8 Hours of Bahrain that closed the calendar. The GR010 Hybrid showed limitations against the Ferrari 499P and the Porsche 963 on several circuits. The balance of power in Hypercar changed substantially compared to 2021-2023, when Toyota dominated the category.

Ferrari set a new performance standard with the 499P. The 499P demonstrated greater consistency throughout the entire 2025 season. Porsche also progressively improved the 963, reaching competitiveness on specific circuits.

Specifications

The TR010 Hybrid retains the V6 biturbo engine with hybrid system of the Le Mans Hypercar specifications. Toyota has not revealed specific details about modifications to the powertrain or improvements to the energy recovery system. The prototype is built at the facilities of Toyota Racing GmbH in Cologne, Germany.

The nomenclature change from GR010 to TR010 accompanies the team's reorganization, which now competes as Toyota Racing instead of Toyota Gazoo Racing. This is the third time Toyota has modified the designation of its prototypes in the modern history of the WEC.

During the LMP1 era, Toyota used TS0X0 nomenclatures: TS030 (2012-2013), TS040 (2014-2015), TS050 (2016-2020). The TS050 was the most successful prototype, winning Le Mans three consecutive times between 2018 and 2020. The GR010 continued that trajectory with victories in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Other Updates in Hypercar

BMW is also presenting significant changes for 2026. The Munich-based manufacturer has redesigned approximately half of the M Hybrid V8's bodywork, including a narrower front end, adjusted side sections, and a new aerodynamic package developed together with Dallara.

Ferrari will make minor updates to the 499P, focused on aerodynamics. The Scuderia won the 2025 constructors' championship, breaking a streak of six consecutive titles by Toyota between 2019 and 2024. Ferrari will not use the available joker evolutions allowed under the regulations.

Cadillac will also modify the V-Series.R with changes to the bodywork and aerodynamic configuration. Alpine may adjust the A424 to improve efficiency on different circuits. Genesis enters the WEC with the GMR-001, a completely new Hypercar debuting in 2026.
