IMSA confirmed the 61-car grid for the 64th edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona, which will be held from January 22 to 25. The organization received nearly 90 entry requests, as revealed by President John Doonan, forcing the selection committee to reduce the group to the circuit's maximum capacity.
This is the fifth consecutive season that IMSA has reached the 61-participant limit for the opening race. The only exception was 2024, when the filming of Brad Pitt's movie temporarily reduced the capacity. In 2020, the grid had 39 cars; since then, growth has been constant.
Team Selection Process
The selection process, explained by Doonan, considers multiple factors. The committee prioritizes teams with full-season commitment in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, followed by those registered for the Michelin Endurance Cup. It also evaluates special marketing programs for teams competing only at Daytona.
Doonan explained that the committee held individual meetings with each applicant to understand their marketing plans, driver lineups, and manufacturer partnerships.
The final grid includes 11 cars in GTP, 14 in LMP2, 15 in GTD PRO, and 21 in GTD. Twelve manufacturers will participate: Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Ford, Lamborghini, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche.
GTP Category
The GTP category features the four LMDh manufacturers: Acura, BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche, plus Aston Martin with its Valkyrie. Porsche Penske Motorsport, winner in 2024 and 2025, maintains its Porsche 963 #6 and #7 with lineups including Laurens Vanthoor, Kevin Estre, Matt Campbell, Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich. Acura Meyer Shank Racing adds Scott Dixon, six-time IndyCar champion, and Alex Palou, four-time IndyCar champion and winner of the 2025 Indianapolis 500, to its ARX-06 #60 and #93. Cadillac has three V-Series.R, including F1 reserve drivers like Frederik Vesti (Mercedes-AMG) in the #31 and Colton Herta (Cadillac) in the #40. BMW M Team WRT presents two M Hybrid V8 with Kevin Magnussen, former F1 driver, in the #25.
LMP2 Category
In LMP2, United Autosports USA, winner in 2025 after Tower Motorsports' disqualification, presents two ORECA LMP2 07. AO Racing seeks its first win with the #99 "Spike", which almost won in 2025 but mechanical issues at the end of the race kept it from victory. Era Motorsport has a renewed lineup with Logan Sargeant, former F1 driver making his Daytona debut. Pratt Miller Motorsports presents the #73 with the brothers Pietro and Enzo Fittipaldi, grandsons of Emerson Fittipaldi.
GTD PRO Category
GTD PRO has had four different winners in its four years: Porsche in 2022, Mercedes-AMG in 2023, Ferrari in 2024, and Ford in 2025. All four manufacturers have contenders in 2026. AO Racing presents "Rexy", the Porsche 911 GT3 R #77 with Nick Tandy, overall winner in 2025 with Porsche Penske. Ford Multimatic Motorsports, winner in 2025, has two Mustang GT3s. Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports presents two Z06 GT3.R, with Antonio García and Alexander Sims, GTD PRO 2025 champions, in the #3. Risi Competizione returns independently after a year of alliance with DragonSpeed. 75 Express presents the Mercedes-AMG GT3 #75 with Will Power, two-time IndyCar champion making his Daytona debut. RLL Team McLaren returns to GTD PRO after three years.
GTD Category
In GTD, 13 Autosport, formerly AWA, defends the title with the Corvette Z06 GT3.R #13. Three of the four champion drivers return: Orey Fidani, Matt Bell, and Lars Kern, alongside debutant Ben Green. Winward Racing, winner in 2021 and 2024, seeks its third consecutive title. Myers Riley Motorsports presents the Ford Mustang GT3 #16 with Romain Grosjean, former F1 and IndyCar driver. The category has 21 entries with nine different manufacturers.
Schedule and Future Outlook
On-track activities begin with the Roar Before the Rolex 24 tests from January 16 to 18. The 24-hour race runs from January 22 to 25 at Daytona International Speedway.
Doonan confirmed that IMSA maintains constant communication with manufacturers. Genesis has already confirmed its GTP entry for 2027. Ford and McLaren are evaluating joining the WeatherTech Championship in 2028, after their initial programs in the WEC.
"Same with Ford and McLaren. We definitely have hopes, but I can't predict. We are working with Daytona International Speedway to maintain the quality of the show and we are maximizing things."
