Lando Norris won the Brazilian Grand Prix Sprint and capitalized on Oscar Piastri's retirement to extend his lead from one point to nine points in the championship standings. The McLaren driver held off late attacks from Andrea Kimi Antonelli to take the eight points for first place.
Before this Sprint, Norris led with 357 points against Piastri's 356. He now has 365 points while his teammate remains on 356 after failing to score due to his lap 6 exit. Max Verstappen added five points and reached 326 points, remaining 39 behind the leader.
Piastri crashes into barriers at wet corner
Piastri lost control of his McLaren at Turn 3 when he hit the wet curbs. The impact immediately eliminated him from the race. Franco Colapinto and Nico Hülkenberg followed the same path minutes later at the same point on the track, forcing the deployment of the red flag to clear the debris and repair the barriers.
Hülkenberg was able to repair his Sauber during the stoppage and returned to compete from the back of the grid. Colapinto wasn't as fortunate and also retired. All three accidents occurred due to the slippery conditions that persisted in specific sectors of the Brazilian circuit.
The race resumed on lap 9 with all cars having changed tires during the stoppage. Norris maintained the lead from the privileged position, but Antonelli became his main threat. George Russell tried to take second place in the first corners after the restart, but Antonelli's Mercedes successfully defended.
Verstappen occupied fourth place after passing Fernando Alonso at the start of the race. The Red Bull didn't show the expected pace in the day's conditions, allowing Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to remain comfortable in the points positions.
Degradation opens door for Mercedes
Norris's soft tires began to lose performance in the final laps. Antonelli took advantage of his better-condition compounds to progressively reduce the gap. On lap 21, he moved within DRS range and to less than half a second of the leading McLaren.
The moment of maximum danger for Norris came when Antonelli made several unsuccessful attacks on the main straights. Gabriel Bortoleto's accident on the final lap brought out yellow flags that froze the positions, preserving the British driver's victory by 0.845 seconds.
Russell maintained third position to complete the Mercedes 1-2 on the podium. Verstappen finished fourth, followed by Leclerc, who passed Alonso in the final laps. Hamilton was seventh and Pierre Gasly eighth to close out the points positions.
The Woking team maintains 721 points in the constructors' championship and now has Norris with a larger margin in the individual standings. The nine-point difference represents a significant variation considering the fight was decided by just one point before this race.
Verstappen needs to recover 39 points in the four remaining events, a complicated task given McLaren's consistent performance. He added five points with his fourth place, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with his direct rival.
"It wasn't easy," explained Norris after getting out of the car. "Kimi put a lot of pressure on me back there and I knew he was going to try everything to get past. I had some tricky moments with my tires and the wind didn't help."
The activity at Interlagos continues this Saturday with the qualifying session for the Grand Prix, scheduled for 15:00 local time.
