Max Verstappen secured pole position for the British Grand Prix after clocking a 1:24.892 on his final Q3 lap, beating Oscar Piastri by 0.103 seconds in a session where Ferrari appeared to be the main contender to challenge McLaren.

The reigning Red Bull champion delivered a perfect lap when it mattered most, capitalizing on the Australian's mistake in his final attempt. Piastri had set the fastest time in the early runs of the decisive session but couldn't improve his mark when given the opportunity.

It was a perfect lap when we needed it most. The car was incredible in these changing conditions

Hamilton led Ferrari's initial threat

Lewis Hamilton had been Piastri's main challenger in the early Q3 runs, with Ferrari showing strong pace that threatened McLaren's position at the front. The seven-time world champion finished fifth with 1:25.095 after a messy final sector on his last lap cost him positions.

The Italian team had saved fresh tires for both drivers during Q2, a strategy that allowed them to advance under pressure when elimination risk was real. Charles Leclerc took sixth with 1:25.121, just beating his teammate.

Norris completes front row for McLaren

Lando Norris will start third on the grid after also failing to improve his previous time on the final lap. The British driver finished 0.118 seconds behind his teammate, keeping McLaren with two cars in the top three positions.

George Russell secured fourth for Mercedes with 1:25.029, forming an all-British second row that will please local fans.

Penalties to shake up final grid

Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman qualified seventh and eighth respectively but both face penalties that will drop them back. Antonelli loses three places for his incident with Verstappen in Austria last week, while Bearman received a ten-place grid drop for violating red flag rules during practice.

Fernando Alonso placed his Aston Martin ninth but will benefit from penalties to start seventh alongside Pierre Gasly, who rounded out the top 10 for Alpine with 1:25.785.

Williams endures disappointing day

Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon finished eleventh and fourteenth respectively, both eliminated in Q2 for a difficult Williams day. Yuki Tsunoda also missed out in the second Red Bull, qualifying twelfth.

Isack Hadjar placed his Racing Bulls thirteenth, with Esteban Ocon completing the Q2 eliminations in fifteenth.

Colapinto in biggest crash of the day

The session was red-flagged when Franco Colapinto lost control of his Alpine at the final corner during Q1. The Argentine initially kept the car going after light wall contact but later stopped and required assistance, prompting the red flag as Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore held his head in his hands.

Colapinto finished last in qualifying with 1:27.060, a result that adds pressure to his future with the team when his continuity was already in doubt.

Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto, Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenberg completed the Q1 eliminations, with the Kick Sauber drivers separated by the Aston Martin in 17th and 19th positions.
