Antonelli qualifies fourth as penalties alter the back of the grid

George Russell claimed pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix on his final lap in Q3. The Mercedes driver beat Max Verstappen by 160 thousandths of a second when the Dutchman seemed destined for the top grid spot.

Verstappen led until the final minutes of qualifying

Red Bull had controlled the qualifying session with Verstappen at the front. The world champion held the top position until Russell completed his decisive lap in the closing minutes of Q3.

Oscar Piastri secured third place for McLaren. The championship leader maintained his advantage over Lando Norris, who faced difficulties and finished seventh in a challenging qualifying session.

Antonelli achieves his best result of the year with Mercedes

Andrea Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth in his best performance of the season. Antonelli outperformed Lewis Hamilton, who took fifth place for Ferrari in a session where he couldn't find the necessary rhythm.

Fernando Alonso placed his Aston Martin in sixth position with 1m 11.586s, taking advantage of the Canadian circuit characteristics. Charles Leclerc will accompany Norris on the fourth row after qualifying eighth with 1m 11.682s.

Q1 eliminates several big names

Pierre Gasly was the slowest in the first round with 1m 12.667s and was eliminated in 20th position. Liam Lawson also failed to advance to Q2 with Racing Bulls, finishing 19th with 1m 12.525s.

Lance Stroll couldn't qualify well in his home race. The driver, returning from injury, finished 18th in a difficult afternoon for Aston Martin at home.

Carlos Sainz ended up 17th after being impeded by Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. The Williams driver lost valuable time on his fast lap when Hadjar didn't move aside quickly enough from the racing line.

Red flag for issues with Albon's Williams

Alex Albon caused an interruption when his Williams lost bodywork parts on the back straight. Marshals needed several minutes to clean the track and remove debris, affecting several drivers' qualifying rhythm.

Tsunoda justifies maneuver that cost him 10 positions

"I saw the tire was sideways and thought it was going to fly off," explained Yuki Tsunoda about his overtake of Oscar Piastri under red flag conditions. The Japanese driver believes he acted correctly: "I passed at a sensible speed of 170 km/h after checking there were no cars nearby."

I don't know what they wanted me to do. Waiting behind the damaged car meant waiting for debris to hit me

The Red Bull driver questions the 10-position penalty: "I don't know what they wanted me to do. Waiting behind the damaged car meant waiting for debris to hit me." Tsunoda will start last despite qualifying 11th.

Penalties reshuffle the back of the grid

Franco Colapinto inherited the 11th place that Tsunoda occupied before his penalty. Hadjar dropped three positions to 12th for impeding Sainz, while Nico Hulkenberg, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon maintained their positions in the top 15.

Gabriel Bortoleto finished 16th with Kick Sauber, followed by Sainz in 17th. The penalties mainly benefited drivers who had just missed out on points in qualifying.
