Lando Norris took advantage of his third attempt in Q3 to set a time of 1:09.954, establishing a new lap record at the Monaco circuit, beating Charles Leclerc by 109 milliseconds. The McLaren driver hadn't secured pole position since the Australian GP and chose Monaco to break that streak with a different strategy: while his rivals changed tires, he pushed his set of soft tires to the limit. Oscar Piastri confirmed McLaren's performance by securing third place, though a mistake at the Nouvelle Chicane prevented him from fighting for a better position. The Australian had set the second-fastest time in the first Q3 run but couldn't improve when it mattered most.

Ferrari splits strategies while Red Bull falls behind

Lewis Hamilton salvaged fourth place for Ferrari with a lap four-tenths slower than his teammate Leclerc, though he faces an investigation by the stewards for an incident with Max Verstappen in Q1. The seven-time world champion could lose positions if the obstruction of the Dutchman is confirmed.

Verstappen finished fifth, more than seven-tenths off the benchmark time, confirming Red Bull's struggles on a track that usually suits their strengths. The reigning champion couldn't find the right balance and was out of the fight for the top positions from the start of Q3.

Hadjar and Ocon deliver Saturday's surprises

The sixth-place finish of Isack Hadjar with Racing Bulls was one of the most striking results of the session. The young driver, who had touched the barriers twice during practice, kept his composure when it mattered and edged out Fernando Alonso by a thousandth of a second.

Esteban Ocon maximized the Haas's performance to secure eighth, confirming the American team's progress on street circuits. His teammate Liam Lawson took ninth, while Alex Albon rounded out the top 10 with a spectacular Q2 lap that had initially placed him ahead of Verstappen.

Total disaster for Mercedes with double elimination

The German team endured their worst qualifying session of the season when George Russell lost power at the start of Q2 and stalled in the tunnel due to electrical issues. Andrea Kimi Antonelli had suffered a similar fate in Q1 after hitting the barriers at the Nouvelle Chicane, triggering a red flag and leaving him 15th.

Carlos Sainz couldn't join his teammate Albon in Q3, blaming soft tire temperature issues that left him 11th. Yuki Tsunoda finished just behind after complaining about traffic with Hadjar, while Nico Hulkenberg took advantage of Mercedes' woes to put Sauber in 13th.

Special regulations add uncertainty for Sunday

Sunday's 78 laps will feature a unique rule requiring drivers to use three different tire compounds, guaranteeing at least two pit stops. This measure aims to create strategic variety on a track where overtaking opportunities are historically minimal.

Gabriel Bortoleto narrowly missed Q2, while Pierre Gasly led Alpine's elimination alongside Franco Colapinto. Lance Stroll will take a one-place grid penalty for a Friday incident, but Oliver Bearman faces the harshest punishment: a 10-place drop for ignoring red flags in practice, sending him to the back of the grid.
