BMW's fourth pole position in IMSA this 2025

Team M Team RLL aims to stop Porsche hegemony in 2025

Belgian driver Dries Vanthoor secured his fourth consecutive pole position of the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season with the No. 24 BMW M Hybrid V8, setting a time of 1:12.854 (110.588 mph) that recalls Ricky Taylor's streak in 2011 when he achieved six consecutive poles in the GRAND-AM championship.

However, the most concerning statistic for BMW is that none of the previous three poles (Daytona, Sebring and Long Beach) have translated into victory. On each occasion, the duo of Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy in the No. 7 Porsche 963 from Porsche Penske Motorsport has taken the top step of the podium, establishing a perfect season start not seen since 2017 when the Taylor brothers achieved five consecutive wins for Wayne Taylor Racing.

The pole is fantastic, but after three unsuccessful attempts we want to convert it into victory. The team has worked intensely since Long Beach to improve our race strategies and execution. We don't want any more questions about when we're going to win

From Long Beach to Laguna Seca: history repeats itself

The previous race at the Long Beach street circuit followed a script BMW hopes not to repeat in Monterey. After securing pole position, the No. 24 BMW was overtaken by the Porsches during an early and perfectly executed pit stop, finishing third while the Porsche 963s claimed the top two positions.

In that 100-minute event, the No. 7 Porsche 963 of Nasr and Tandy demonstrated its superiority by leading 70 of the 75 laps, setting its fastest lap on lap 64 with a time of 1:12.708, just 4 thousandths faster than the No. 6 of Campbell and Jaminet, which now starts second at Laguna Seca.

BMW M Team acknowledges past mistakes

For BMW M Team RLL, this fourth opportunity represents a unique chance to break Porsche Penske Motorsport's streak and begin converting their undeniable single-lap speed into concrete results that will allow them to advance in the championship.
