BWT Alpine F1 Team has announced that Franco Colapinto will take one of their race seats for the next five rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, forming a duo with Pierre Gasly starting from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.
The decision comes just one day after the surprising resignation of Oliver Oakes as team principal, who had defended Jack Doohan's continuity. With this change, Flavio Briatore consolidates his power within the French structure that currently sits ninth in the constructors' championship with just 7 points, far behind McLaren who leads with 246 points.
A change of direction under Briatore's influence
"After reviewing the initial races of the season, we've made the decision to place Franco in the car alongside Pierre for the next five races," explained Briatore, who now adds interim team management to his role as executive advisor.

The Italian, who returns to a management position 16 years after his controversial departure due to the "Crashgate" scandal, argued that with a more competitive car and such a closely matched field, driver rotation will allow "a complete and fair evaluation to maximize our ambitions for next year."
Five races: Colapinto's opportunity
The evaluation period for the Argentine driver will cover exactly five consecutive races: the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, followed by Monaco and Spain (forming part of an intense triple-header), then continuing in Canada and concluding with his confirmed participation in Austria.
After these five races, Alpine will conduct another evaluation before the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July, where the lineup for the second half of the season will be determined.
"I want to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to race competitively over the next five Grands Prix," said Colapinto, who had been serving as one of the test and reserve drivers. "I've stayed prepared through the testing program and in the Enstone simulator. I'll do everything possible to adapt quickly and deliver the best possible results alongside Pierre."
The Argentine will race with #43 on the A525, aiming to improve the team's poor results, which have so far only yielded 7 points thanks to Gasly, who sits twelfth in the drivers' championship.
Doohan: A pointless start and a temporary step aside
Meanwhile, Doohan, who has failed to score points in the six Grands Prix contested this season, will remain as the primary reserve driver during this period, unlike other rookies like Antonelli (Mercedes) and Bearman (Ferrari) who have already scored points.
"Obviously, this latest chapter is difficult to accept because, as a professional driver, I naturally want to compete," acknowledged the Australian. "I'll continue working hard, will watch the next five races with interest, and will keep pursuing my personal goals."
Context of a difficult season
Alpine is going through a particularly tough time in this 2025 season. With just 7 points, they're well behind their direct competitors like RB F1 Team (8 points) and only ahead of Sauber (6 points). The situation contrasts sharply with McLaren's dominance, with Piastri (131 points and 4 wins) and Norris (115 points and 1 win) leading both championships.
The bet on Colapinto aims to turn things around, while the French structure is already looking toward 2026, a year Briatore considers "important for the team" with the upcoming regulatory changes.
