The Aston Martin Valkyrie will race lighter and with more power at the upcoming World Endurance Championship (WEC) round this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, according to Balance of Performance (BoP) adjustments announced by the FIA.
The British prototypes operated by Heart of Racing team will benefit from a 16 kg reduction compared to the Imola round, now weighing 1035 kg. Additionally, their maximum power increases by 15 kW (20 hp), reaching 520 kW (697 hp) - the limit allowed in the Hypercar category.
These favorable changes for Aston Martin come after two opening races where the Valkyrie showed slower pace than expected. The BoP regulations consider performance from the previous three events for calculations, but a new car like the Valkyrie had initially been treated as the fastest entry before its championship debut.
This situation explains the improved technical conditions now that its results in Qatar and Imola are factored into the equation. Alongside weight and power modifications, Aston Martin also receives an 8 MJ increase in energy allocation per stint, now totaling 908 MJ.
Ferrari and Toyota face restrictions after victories
The situation differs for Ferrari and Toyota, who have won the season's first two rounds. Ferrari's 499P, victorious in both Qatar and Imola, must add 12 kg to its minimum weight (now 1057 kg). Its maximum power is also reduced by 19 kW (25.5 hp), dropping to 489 kW (656 hp).
Toyota also receives restrictive adjustments for its GR010 Hybrid. The Japanese prototype loses 20 kW (26.8 hp) of maximum power (retaining 480 kW/643 hp) while adding 4 kg to its minimum weight (now 1069 kg).
To balance these limitations, both Ferrari and Toyota receive compensation in their power gain system above 250 km/h. Ferrari gets an additional 3.7%, while Toyota receives an 8.3% increase.
Widespread adjustments across the grid
Other manufacturers also experience technical parameter changes. BMW, after its Imola podium, sees its M Hybrid V8 gain 7 kg (now 1049 kg) while losing 10 kW (13 hp) of maximum power.
The Porsche 963 adds 2 kg and loses 9 kW of power. Alpine increases its A424's weight by 1 kg, while Cadillac does the same with its V-Series.R, also reducing power by 9 kW.
The Peugeot 9X8 remains at the category's minimum weight (1030 kg) and keeps maximum power of 520 kW, being one of the least affected by adjustments.
Compared to last year's Spa race, Toyota has lost 35 kW total power, Ferrari 17 kW, Cadillac 15 kW and Porsche 13 kW. Regarding weight, Porsche shows the largest increase with 18 kg more than twelve months ago.
Changes in LMGT3 too
The LMGT3 category also undergoes BoP modifications. All models except the Ford Mustang GT3 receive power reductions. The biggest cuts affect the Imola-winning Porsche 911 GT3 R and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R, both losing 5%.
The BMW M4 GT3 and McLaren 720S GT3 Evo receive the largest weight increases (11 kg and 8 kg respectively). In contrast, the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo benefits from a 10 kg reduction, while the Ferrari 296 GT3 loses 7 kg.
Considering success ballast, the No. 33 TF Sport Corvette becomes the heaviest at 1406 kg, followed by the No. 59 United Autosports McLaren at 1383 kg.
Track activities for this third WEC round - the last before June's 24 Hours of Le Mans - begin Thursday at 11:30 local time.

I’ve had a passion for motorsport since my childhood. Even as a child, I used to often have a camera between my hands. Later, I professionalized in the audiovisual field and then the idea to mix these two passions for racing and photography came up. Now, I mainly cover WEC and endurance racing, but also local hillclimb events.
