Oscar Piastri secured his third victory of the 2025 season at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, a result that propelled him to the top of the Drivers' Championship. The McLaren driver benefited from a penalty imposed on Max Verstappen to claim victory at the Jeddah circuit.

The race began with a fierce battle between Verstappen and Piastri at the first corner, where the Dutchman gained position by cutting the chicane - an action that resulted in a five-second penalty served during his pit stop.

After serving his penalty, Verstappen fell behind the Australian, who maintained a consistent pace at the front to cross the finish line 2.8 seconds ahead of the Red Bull driver. Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third place, securing his first top-three finish of the current season.

"It was quite a tough race. I'm really happy to have won. I did my part in the first corner and it was enough. It was really difficult out there, I couldn't keep up with Max at the end of the first stint, I just burned through my tires, but the clean air was nice after the pit stops."

Lando Norris climbed from tenth on the grid to fourth position, unable to catch Leclerc in the battle for the final podium spot. The British driver had crashed during Saturday's qualifying, forcing him to start from a disadvantaged position.

The Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finished fifth and sixth respectively, while Lewis Hamilton, now with Ferrari, scored points by finishing seventh. Williams achieved a double points finish with Carlos Sainz in eighth and Alex Albon in ninth, while Isack Hadjar rounded out the top 10 for Racing Bulls.

The incident between Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda on the opening lap triggered the only Safety Car intervention, with both drivers retiring early from the race.

With this result, Piastri becomes the first Australian driver to lead the World Championship in 15 years, since his current manager Mark Webber. The McLaren driver now holds a 10-point advantage over teammate Norris in the standings.

The next event on the calendar will be the Miami Grand Prix, scheduled for May 2-4 at the circuit built around Hard Rock Stadium.
