Qualifying Results
Dries Vanthoor and BMW M Team RLL have achieved their third consecutive Motul Pole Award in the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. The 26-year-old Belgian driver set a time of 1:11.539 (99.034 mph) with the BMW M Hybrid V8 #24, completing a historic triple after poles at Daytona and Sebring. BMW's dominance was confirmed with a spectacular 1-2 in qualifying:
The Acuras took fifth and sixth positions, while the Cadillacs finished seventh and eighth, forming a grid ordered by manufacturers in the top eight spots.
The Special Return of Robert Wickens
The most attention-grabbing entry is that of Robert Wickens, who will make his GTD debut with the Corvette Z06 GT3.R #36 from DXDT Racing. The Canadian driver, who was partially paralyzed after an IndyCar accident in 2018, will compete thanks to an electronic manual braking system developed by Bosch.
This race marks his return to the WeatherTech Championship since his participation at Daytona in 2017. Wickens, 2023 TCR champion in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, will share the car with Tommy Milner, a four-time winner at Long Beach.
History and Rivalries
What began as an experimental test has become a cornerstone of North American motorsport. Chris Pook organized the first race in 1975, and now in 2025 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic event.
Some key rivalries and facts:
- Porsche remains undefeated in GTP in the 2025 season with Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr
- Cadillac has won six of the last seven prototype races since 2017
- Lexus and Vasser Sullivan Racing aim for their third consecutive GTD victory
The race's short duration (100 minutes) makes pit stop strategy a decisive element. The winners of the last two GTP editions opted not to change tires during their single scheduled pit stop.
