This Saturday, March 15, the 73rd edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring will take place at the Sebring International Raceway, the second round of the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The legendary circuit in Florida, built on a former military airbase, combines original concrete sections from World War II with modern asphalt sections, creating one of the most demanding tracks for both cars and drivers.

The Circuit: A Unique Challenge for Mechanics and Drivers

The Sebring track, built on a former military airbase, is known for its uneven surface and characteristic bumps that test both the durability of the vehicles and the concentration of the drivers. Unlike other more modern tracks, Sebring retains much of its original design from 1952, when the race was extended to 12 hours.

Its most technical corners, such as the famous Sunset Bend (Turn 17) and the sequence of Tower Turn (Turns 12-16), are often decisive in the final outcome. Additionally, the transition from day to night adds an extra layer of difficulty, with temperature changes significantly affecting tire behavior and aerodynamics.

2024 Retrospective: A Battle Until the Last Lap

The 2024 edition was one of the most competitive in recent history. The race was marked by twelve safety car interventions and an exciting finish. The Cadillacs dominated much of the race, with Pipo Derani establishing a lead of 25 seconds, until an incident with the Ferrari 296 GT3 of Miguel Molina took him out of contention in the seventh hour.

In the final five minutes, after the last restart, Louis Delétraz driving the Acura ARX-06 for Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti managed to overtake Sébastien Bourdais in the Cadillac V-Series.R, securing the victory by just 0.891 seconds, one of the narrowest margins in the history of the race.

GTP Category: Championship Leaders and New Contenders

The premier prototype category features a more competitive grid than ever this year. Porsche Penske Motorsport arrives as the championship leader after their victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona on January 26. The Porsche 963 number 7 driven by Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy, and Laurens Vanthoor will attempt to maintain their momentum against the Cadillac V-Series.R number 40 of Wayne Taylor Racing, the current Sebring winner after their brand switch for the 2025 season.

JDC-Miller MotorSports, which already secured a surprising victory in 2021, has strengthened its lineup with the addition of Swiss Formula E driver Nico Müller, who will join Tijmen van der Helm and Gianmaria Bruni in the Porsche 963 number 85. Müller, aged 33, brings experience from multiple disciplines and knows Sebring from his previous participations in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

This edition introduces two major technical novelties: the North American debut of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH and Lamborghini's quest for redemption. The Valkyrie, powered by a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12, will be managed by the THOR team with Ross Gunn, Roman De Angelis, and Alex Riberas at the wheel. Meanwhile, Lamborghini hopes to improve its performance after an early retirement at Daytona, where its SC63 number 63 driven by Mirko Bortolotti, Romain Grosjean, Daniil Kvyat, and Edoardo Mortara completed only 34 laps due to mechanical issues.

LMP2 Category: Era Motorsport Defends Title Against Strong Competition

In the LMP2 category, all teams use the Oreca 07 chassis with a Gibson engine, leveling the playing field and making strategy and driver skill the key differentiators. Era Motorsport, the 2024 winner, returns to defend its title but will face strong opposition.

GTD Pro and GTD Categories: Battle of Brands

The GT Daytona (GTD) Pro and GTD categories, based on GT3 vehicles, attract the most manufacturers. In GTD Pro, Lexus will aim to repeat its 2024 victory, albeit with a last-minute change: José María López, a two-time WEC champion, will replace Ben Barnicoat (injured in a mountain biking accident) alongside Aaron Telitz and Kyle Kirkwood in the Lexus RC F GT3 number 14 of Vasser Sullivan.

Ford arrives with confidence after its victory at Daytona with the Mustang GT3 number 65 of Multimatic Motorsports, driven by Christopher Mies, Dennis Olsen, and Frédéric Vervisch. However, Vervisch himself acknowledges that "Sebring is not the ideal circuit for our car" due to its technical characteristics.

In GTD, Mercedes-AMG will attempt to repeat the success of Winward Racing in 2024, while the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R number 13 of the AWA team, winner at Daytona with Matt Bell, Orey Fidani, Lars Kern, and Marvin Kirchhöfer, will seek its second consecutive victory of the season.

Tactical Analysis: Key Factors for Victory

Strategy at Sebring differs significantly from Daytona. While both are endurance races, Sebring presents unique challenges:

Tire Management: The abrasive surface of the circuit accelerates wear, forcing teams to balance performance with durability.
Fuel Consumption: Frequent yellow flag periods (twelve in 2024) alter refueling strategies and can be decisive.
Traffic: With 57 vehicles on track across four categories, overtaking is constant and requires precision.
Day-Night Transition: The race starts at 10:10 AM and ends at 10:10 PM, so teams must adapt to changing lighting and temperature conditions.

The winning teams are usually those that best adapt to changing circumstances and remain calm during critical moments.

Predictions: An Edition Open to Surprises

Although Porsche starts as the favorite after its victory at Daytona, the history of Sebring shows that this race rarely follows predictions. Wayne Taylor Racing will attempt to repeat its 2024 victory, now with Cadillac instead of Acura.

The debut of the Aston Martin Valkyrie could be a surprise, especially if reliability becomes a determining factor on such a demanding circuit as Sebring. In the GTD categories, the battle between Lexus, Ford, Chevrolet, Mercedes-AMG, and BMW promises to be as tight as at Daytona.
