The Cadillac Formula 1 team has received final approval to join the Formula 1 grid starting in March 2026, expanding the championship to 11 teams. The FIA and Formula One Management confirmed that the joint venture between General Motors and TWG Motorsports has met all necessary requirements to participate in the world's most prestigious racing series.
An American Alliance Taking Shape
The collaboration between TWG Motorsports and General Motors creates a genuinely American presence in Formula 1. This partnership brings together the substantial resources and motorsport experience of TWG Group with GM's engineering capabilities and automotive heritage.
"Over the past year, we have worked hand-in-hand with GM to establish a robust foundation for an extraordinary entry into Formula 1," said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports. "Now, with 2026 on our horizon following today's final approval, we are accelerating our efforts — expanding our facilities, refining advanced technologies, and continuing to add top-level talent."
The announcement follows the previous confirmation that Graeme Lowdon will serve as the Team Principal of the Cadillac Formula 1 team. Additionally, Russ O'Blenes has been appointed CEO of TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC, a new company aiming to position Cadillac as a "full manufacturer" team that will eventually build both the chassis and power units for Formula 1.
Technical Development Already Underway
Since announcing its bid to join Formula 1 in January 2023, TWG Motorsports has assembled a team of over 300 professionals focused on aerodynamics, chassis development, and simulation work. The organization maintains operations at multiple locations, including Indianapolis, Charlotte, Warren (Michigan), and Silverstone (England).
"The preparation and development of our power unit continues, and we have been working hard to hire top-level talent," said O'Blenes. "As we continue adding experienced engineering personnel, we expect to launch our first V6 in the near future."
Expanding Formula 1's Global Reach
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his support for the championship's expansion: "Today marks a transformative moment, and I am proud to lead the Federation in this progressive step for the championship. The expansion of the FIA Formula 1 Championship to an eleventh team in 2026 is a crucial moment. GM/Cadillac brings fresh energy, aligning with the new FIA 2026 regulations and ushering in an exciting era for the sport."
General Motors President Mark Reuss added: "We are excited that the Cadillac Formula 1 team is official, as the team has been accelerating its work. We are incredibly grateful for the support from the leadership of the FIA and Formula One Management towards us and for our partnership with TWG. The excitement only grows as we get closer to showcasing GM's engineering expertise on the prestigious global stage of F1."
A Multidisciplinary Racing Portfolio
TWG Motorsports represents the racing division of TWG Global, created to unify a diverse motorsport portfolio across Formula 1, IndyCar, Formula E, IMSA, and NASCAR. Beyond the Cadillac Formula 1 program, TWG Motorsports has stakes in Spire Motorsports, Andretti Global, and Wayne Taylor Racing.
The expansion to 11 teams marks a significant development for Formula 1, which has maintained a stable grid of 10 teams for several years. With Cadillac joining in 2026, coinciding with the introduction of new technical regulations, the championship continues to attract major automotive manufacturers seeking to compete at the highest level of motorsport.
