Chevrolet unveiled the Blazer EV.R prototype during the activities leading up to the 2025 DAYTONA 500. This model is part of the development of new technologies applied both on the track and in production vehicles. The Blazer EV.R is equipped with three six-phase electric motors that generate over 1,300 horsepower, reaching 15,000 rpm, powered by a 78 kWh liquid-cooled battery.
Eric Warren, global competition director at General Motors, highlighted the importance of transferring technology from motorsport to production vehicles to improve power, durability, and efficiency. While V8 technology will remain in NASCAR, the Blazer EV.R reinforces Chevrolet’s commitment to electrification in the consumer market.
Blazer EV.R Design and Development
The prototype was developed by GM Design in collaboration with NASCAR. Initially, a conceptual version was created based on the Blazer EV SS, featuring advanced aerodynamic elements such as a forged carbon fiber wing and LED lights. The design was later adjusted to meet NASCAR specifications.
According to Adam Riccobelli, lead designer, adapting to aerodynamic requirements was one of the biggest challenges. "We worked closely with the aerodynamics team to refine every detail of the prototype body, maintaining a balance between style and performance."
The Blazer EV.R uses NASCAR’s Next Gen chassis, a programmable all-wheel drive system, and Goodyear Racing Eagle tires. During tests at Carolina Motorsports Park, the prototype demonstrated consistent race-pace performance.
Electric Technology in NASCAR
The Blazer EV.R joins other electric advances in NASCAR. During the 2024 Chicago Street Race, an electric prototype developed with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota was introduced, featuring STARD UHP motors and a regenerative braking system. Although it won’t participate in official competitions, this vehicle will serve as a test platform to evaluate its performance on different types of tracks.
NASCAR and ABB have started a collaboration to reduce emissions and modernize the championship’s operations. The plan includes the use of renewable energy and the development of electric vehicles to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035, with a gradual introduction of this technology in lower series.
Blazer EV SS at Daytona
Additionally, Chevrolet announced that the Blazer EV SS will be the official pace car for the 67th DAYTONA 500. This model, with 615 horsepower and a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 3.4 seconds, is the fastest in the SS lineup.
The Blazer EV.R reflects Chevrolet’s ongoing commitment to developing high-performance electric vehicles, using motorsport as a testing ground for technological innovation.
