NASCAR Mexico continues with line selection in 2025

How line selection will apply to NASCAR Mexico Series 2025 restarts

The choose rule, first introduced in the NASCAR México Series in 2024, will continue during the 2025 season. This rule allows drivers to choose between the inside or outside lane before each restart, giving them more control over their position on the track. Inspired by NASCAR regulations in the United States, this measure aims to eliminate inherent disadvantages in restarts and provide competitors with more strategic options.

How does the choose rule work?

Before the restart, and once the line-up is correct, drivers must stay behind the pace car in a single file. Upon receiving the signal from race control, they can choose between the inside or outside lane after crossing the start/finish line and before reaching the "V" mark or the cones placed as a reference.

The pace car will move to the outside lane to indicate the start of the process. Drivers must make their choice without subsequent changes, as any infringement will result in a penalty.

Penalties and Restrictions

  • Changing position before selecting a lane.
  • Touching the boundary mark with the tires.
  • Changing the lane after making a selection.
  • Interfering with the process.

Cars in pits during the choose rule selection, those penalized, or those choosing to restart from the rear cannot participate in the process and must line up in the longest line.

Procedure in Case of a Yellow Flag

If the yellow flag remains after the choose rule selection, drivers must maintain their chosen position. In the case of another yellow flag before completing a green lap, positions will be kept according to the restart order, except for cars involved in incidents.

During the last attempt at a white-flag-green-flag finish (w/g/c), if the yellow flag appears after all cars have crossed the finish line, that will be the final order, except for affected cars.

Application on Different Tracks

The choose rule may have varying effects depending on the circuit. On tracks like Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, with technical corners and long straights, lane selection can influence how drivers approach the first turns. On smaller ovals, like San Luis Potosí, where restarts are frequent, it allows drivers to adjust their position for better opportunities during the restart.
