Seven-time NASCAR champion, Jimmie Johnson, has taken majority control of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB following a team restructuring that includes Knighthead Capital Management, LLC as a minority partner. This change aims to drive growth and strengthen the team's operations in NASCAR and other motorsport-related areas.
Richard Petty remains part of the team
Richard Petty, known as "The King" and a historic NASCAR figure, continues his role as an ambassador for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB. His iconic number 43 remains active and tied to the team, ensuring the continuity of his legacy in the sport. Although he no longer holds an operational role since the transformation of Richard Petty Motorsports in 2021, his presence remains vital to the team's identity.
What changed in the team's structure?
The most significant change is that Johnson is now the majority owner, giving him greater control over the team's direction. This was made possible as Maury Gallagher, the team's founder, decided to sell part of his stake and take on a more symbolic role as an ambassador. Gallagher was instrumental in the team's evolution, from its successes with GMS Racing, including five championships and 71 wins, to its merger with Richard Petty Motorsports.
Who will be the drivers in 2025?
LEGACY MOTOR CLUB will field Erik Jones in the iconic number 43 and John Hunter Nemechek in the number 42 for full-time competition in the NASCAR Cup Series. Additionally, Jimmie Johnson will drive the number 84 in select events.
Erik Jones will look to solidify his performance after key wins in previous seasons, while John Hunter Nemechek joins the team with great potential and aspirations to make an impact in the premier series.
Preparations for the 2025 season
With these changes, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB is gearing up for the 2025 season. The first event will be "The Clash" at Bowman Gray Stadium on February 2, followed by the Daytona 500 on February 16. With Johnson at the helm and backed by Knighthead, the team aims to usher in a new chapter and improve its performance on the track.
