WRC points system changes for 2025

FIA responds to criticism with simpler points system in WRC

The World Rally Championship will implement a revamped points system in 2025, designed to prioritize victories and simplify the scoring process. The decision, announced on November 11 in Kigali, Rwanda, by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council, aims to enhance competitiveness and address criticisms of the current model. This change follows a 2024 season defined by a close fight for the titles, with the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships decided on the final day of competition.

A Balance Between Simplicity and Competition

The new system allows drivers to score a maximum of 35 points per rally, an increase compared to the current model’s 30 points. This includes points from the overall classification, "Super Sunday," and Power Stage. "Super Sunday" will remain a pivotal element in rally strategy, while the Power Stage continues to provide an additional opportunity for teams to secure valuable bonuses. Peter Thul, senior director of sport at the WRC promoter, noted that these updates refine an already successful system. While the 2024 model generated intense title battles, it also faced criticism for its complexity. With the new structure, the FIA aims to balance competitiveness with clarity, aligning with teams’ expectations and offering fans a more accessible spectacle.
