Jaguar TCS Racing secured a victory from last place in the opening round of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with Mitch Evans climbing from the back of the grid to the top spot.
The São Paulo e-Prix marked the competitive debut of the GEN3 Evo in Formula E. Mitch Evans, from Jaguar TCS Racing, started the race in 22nd position after a challenging qualifying session but managed to surpass his competitors to take the win. This first race of the season featured a total of 111 overtakes, multiple race leaders, and several interruptions, including two red flags. One of the most notable moments was a crash involving reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein, whose Porsche ended up overturned after hitting the wall. Fortunately, Wehrlein walked away unscathed.
Evans took advantage of the additional power provided by the improved ATTACK MODE, now enabling four-wheel drive, allowing him to recover crucial positions in the final stages of the competition.
Taylor Barnard, from NEOM McLaren, made history as the youngest driver ever to reach a podium in Formula E. At just 20 years old, he climbed from 17th place to finish third, behind Evans and António Félix da Costa, from TAG Heuer Porsche. Barnard's strategy, along with the support of his teammate Sam Bird, was instrumental in securing the team's lead in the constructors' standings.
Oliver Rowland, who led much of the race in his Nissan, suffered a penalty that dropped him to 14th position, losing a key opportunity to score points. Meanwhile, Edoardo Mortara, from Mahindra Racing, finished fifth, followed by Norman Nato and Nyck de Vries.
Formula E also reinforced its commitment to sustainability during the event. Educational and community activities were organized, including an event by FIA Girls on Track, which gathered 120 girls for workshops on racing, technology, and professional development. Additionally, the organization donated €25,000 to the PiPA association to support educational programs and benefit vulnerable communities.
Following this start in São Paulo, the 2024/25 season will continue in Mexico City on January 11, 2025, where teams will aim to solidify their results in the championship.
