Toyota unveiled its new project at the 2024 SEMA Show: the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept. This model, inspired by the legendary 1990s Celica GT-Four rally cars, revisits the brand's heritage with a nod to the future. Based on the 2024 GR86 with the performance package, the concept aims to connect Toyota's past and present in rallying.
A Fusion of Past and Present
The potential return of the World Rally Championship to the United States has been a motivating factor for Toyota to look back at its history. The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept incorporates elements from the GR Corolla's turbocharged three-cylinder engine and GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, integrating them into the GR86 structure. This model brings together two of the most recognized members of the GR family to revive the essence of the Celica GT-Four with modern technology.
Paul Doleshal, Motorsports and Assets Manager at Toyota Motor North America, explained that the main idea was to recreate the image of the car that made a mark on rally stages and popular video games. This modernized concept is a tribute to those models enthusiasts continue to remember.
The Transformation Process of the GR86
Adapting the GR86 to integrate the GR Corolla's engine and drivetrain posed significant manufacturing challenges. The GR86 chassis was modified to accommodate the GR Corolla’s transverse G16E-GTS engine, which required a custom subframe and special engine mounts. Additionally, the suspension system was adjusted, incorporating Corolla components to drive power to the front wheels. Custom control arms were developed, and adjustable dampers were installed to complement the structural modifications.
At the rear, the GR86’s differential was replaced with the GR Corolla’s, maintaining the original electronic functionality and proper power distribution. To optimize engine cooling, the G16 was fitted with a high-performance intercooler and an oil cooler, while a racing electronic management system controlled key aspects of engine performance.
Aesthetic That Evokes Classic Rally
The exterior of the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept stands out with a "Halo White" finish, decorated with a red and green color scheme inspired by the classic Celica GT-Four. Large red mud flaps, a custom exhaust, and a wing reminiscent of the Celica complete the classic rally look. Inside, a white roll cage, racing seats, and six-point harnesses were installed, echoing the style of Toyota Gazoo Racing.
Mike Tripp, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota, mentioned that this project is a gift for GR family and rally fans, a way to celebrate past achievements and build excitement for the potential return of the WRC to the United States.
Toyota at SEMA 2024
The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept is showcased alongside other Toyota models at the SEMA Show, held from November 5 to 8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. At the Toyota booth, attendees can explore both concept and production vehicles, including cars, SUVs, and trucks, in a space that highlights how the brand continues to push performance in all its forms.
