Mercedes-AMG is considering a return to endurance racing, according to several industry sources. The German brand is in discussions with key players in the sport and is evaluating its possible participation in IMSA and WEC, using an LMDh prototype or a hypercar. It would be their first participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans since the late 90s.

Beyond the WEC: a strategy linked to Formula 1

There is speculation that this project might have additional objectives. It is believed that Mercedes could use the development of its hypercar to optimize resources for its Formula 1 team, taking advantage of the flexibility these types of projects offer regarding budget caps. Teams like Ferrari and Red Bull have already been under suspicion for using this strategy.

The possible withdrawal of Lamborghini

Lamborghini's plans in WEC could also influence Mercedes' decision. If Lamborghini reduces or withdraws its participation in 2025, it could leave room on the grid for new competitors. Currently, the championship is capped at 40 cars, which limits opportunities for new brands to join.

Mercedes has already shown interest in participating in the LMGT3 category with its AMG GT3 Evo, although it has not yet homologated this model for WEC. If space becomes available on the grid, the brand could take the opportunity to join in 2025.

The battle for a place in WEC

If Mercedes-AMG joins WEC, it will become the twelfth manufacturer in the top category, alongside Ferrari, Toyota, Porsche, Peugeot, and others. Aston Martin is also set to enter in 2025, which will increase the number of competitors in the championship.
