The 2024 Rallye du Maroc features several new team lineups debuting in this edition. The 25 km prologue will start in Marrakech before the competitors transfer to the bivouac in Zagora. This race is a crucial stage in preparation for the Dakar.
The previous winners of the race are present: Yazeed Al Rajhi (2023), Guerlain Chicherit (2022), and Nasser Al Attiyah (2021). Chicherit will compete with a Mini from the X-raid team, while Al Attiyah debuts with Dacia, and Al Rajhi will continue with Toyota.
Dacia and Ford Debut
This year, Dacia Sandriders and Ford M-Sport are presenting new vehicles. Al Attiyah and Sébastien Loeb lead the Dacia team, while Ford has Carlos Sainz and Mattias Ekström.
Al Attiyah, the current world champion, aims to achieve a result that keeps him in contention for the championship. Sainz, for his part, competes for the first time in Morocco with Ford, using the race as preparation for the Dakar.
X-raid Update
The X-raid team is competing with a gasoline-powered Mini instead of a diesel. Guerlain Chicherit leads the team, accompanied by Guillaume de Mévius and Joao Ferreira. Chicherit's Mini features a design inspired by the Zebra Buggy from the 2016 Dakar.
New Competitors in SSV and Challenger
Alexandre Giroud and Manuel Andújar, former Dakar winners in quads, are participating in new categories. Giroud will compete in Challenger with an OT3, while Andújar will race in SSV with a Can-Am Maverick R. Additionally, drivers like Hunter Miller and Craig Lumsdem will be present with South Racing.
Prologue and Technical Features
David Castera, the event organizer, explained that the prologue will be a technical challenge that requires precision and care from the drivers. The terrain will consist of rocky and slippery sections, increasing the difficulty from the very first day in a race that will stretch over five days and more than 2,400 kilometers.
