Ross Chastain achieved his first victory of the season at Kansas Speedway during the opening of the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Cup Series. Chastain, driving his No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, took the lead from Martin Truex Jr. on lap 248 and resisted the pressure from William Byron to cross the finish line with a 0.388-second advantage.
Chastain's win was a surprise, as he is not part of the drivers contending for the championship. His victory thwarted Byron's plans, who had hoped to secure an automatic pass to the Round of 8 with a win. Byron led 24 laps but could not overcome Chastain's aerodynamic advantage in the final laps.
Final laps showdown
The final restart was decisive for Chastain, who took advantage of the situation to snatch first place from Truex Jr. and keep Byron at bay until the end. Truex had to settle for third place, while defending series champion Ryan Blaney finished fourth after a loose wheel forced him to make an unscheduled pit stop.
Ty Gibbs completed the top 5, while other playoff drivers like Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin finished within the top ten. Chase Elliott, who started from the back due to an engine change, managed to climb up to ninth place.
Championship standings after Kansas
William Byron heads to the next race at Talladega as the series leader, with a six-point lead over Bell and Blaney. On the other hand, Kyle Larson, who arrived in Kansas as the top seed, suffered a setback after hitting the wall on lap 19. Despite these issues, Larson remains in fourth place in the championship, 18 points above the cut-off line.
As for Tyler Reddick, last year's Kansas winner, he could only manage 25th place, leaving him four points below the cut line for the Round of 8. Daniel Suarez, Chase Briscoe, and Austin Cindric also struggled during the race, complicating their chances of advancing in the playoffs.
What’s next in the playoffs
With the next race at Talladega Superspeedway, playoff drivers will face a new challenge. The unpredictable nature of Talladega will be crucial in determining which drivers advance to the Round of 8, as any mistake can prove costly at this stage of the playoffs.
