Ford has announced the incorporation of Californian driver Mitch Guthrie Jr. into their team for the 2025 edition of the Dakar. Guthrie, after competing for five years in the Challenger class, will move up to the Ultimate category, one of the toughest challenges of the rally. This time, he will drive the Ford Raptor T1+, specially designed to tackle the difficulties of the route.
Mitch Guthrie Jr.'s step up to the 2025 Dakar
Guthrie has competed in the Dakar since 2020, showing great performance in the UTV category. His victories in events such as the Sonora Rally and the Desafío Ruta 40 have pushed him to seek new challenges. 2025 will be a crucial year for his career, as he will compete against the best in the world rally scene.
The Ford Raptor T1+, with its V8 engine and 37-inch tires, has been designed to overcome the demanding desert stages. "I always dreamed of driving a Raptor, and now competing with one in the Dakar is something incredible," said Guthrie Jr.
Off-road career and experience
Before arriving at the Dakar, Guthrie had already made his mark in desert racing in North America, securing victories in races such as the Baja 1000 and the Mint 400. His mastery of challenging terrains gives him a strong advantage to face the upcoming edition of the Dakar.
In this adventure, he will be accompanied by co-driver Kellon Walch. Walch is a Dakar veteran, with more than a decade of experience and a track record that includes stage wins in the bike category. Together, they have proven to be an effective duo, with eight stage victories during their time in the Challenger class.
In addition to Guthrie, the Ford team will feature Carlos Sainz, the current champion of the Ultimate category. This collaboration gives Guthrie the chance to learn from one of the most experienced drivers in the rally. "It’s an honor to compete alongside Carlos; I know his experience will be crucial for us," said the driver.
The Dakar 2025 will take place from January 3 to 17, covering over 5,000 kilometers in 14 days. The route will conclude in the dunes of the Empty Quarter, where the high temperatures and extreme conditions are expected to pose a constant challenge for the competitors.
