Alex Palou secured his third title in the INDYCAR series after the race at Nashville Superspeedway. Despite finishing 11th, it was enough to crown him champion once again, while his closest rival, Will Power, encountered issues with his vehicle. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver thus concludes a dominant cycle, achieving his third championship in four years.
Palou's race and Power's issues
Palou, driving the #10 Honda for Chip Ganassi, only needed to finish ninth or better to win the championship, but he started from 24th due to a penalty following an engine change. However, he quickly gained positions. The course of the race changed on lap 13 when Will Power, the only one with a chance to take the title from him, lost time due to a loose seatbelt. This situation ended Power’s hopes, allowing Palou to run without pressure for the remainder of the race.
Herta's victory on the oval
While the championship was being decided, Colton Herta put on a show of his own. The Andretti Global driver overtook Pato O'Ward on lap 202, earning his first victory on an oval. Herta, a Nashville resident, beat O'Ward by over a second and also finished the season in second place overall, his best result to date.
Josef Newgarden finished third, followed by Kyle Kirkwood in fourth and Scott McLaughlin in fifth. The race saw multiple overtakes, setting a record for the series at this track.
Palou joins a select group of drivers who have won three championships in the INDYCAR Series, solidifying his name among the greats. Herta, for his part, will aim to build on this momentum and maintain his performance in 2025.
