The Juncos Hollinger Racing team has announced the mutual separation with its driver Agustín Canapino, effective immediately. This decision comes in a season that has been filled with challenges both on and off the track for the Argentine driver.
Canapino, 34 years old, faced several problems in his second year with the team. In June, he had to miss the Road America race due to mental health issues, as reported by the team. This absence was just one of the difficulties he faced during the season.
The team highlighted Canapino's effort and dedication in an official statement: "Agustín took a great leap by joining us in open-wheel racing, adapting to a new driving style and a new life in the United States. We are very proud of what we have achieved together," expressed Juncos Hollinger Racing.
During his time with the team, Canapino was involved in several controversies. At the Detroit Grand Prix, a collision with Arrow McLaren rookie Theo Pourchaire caused tensions and resulted in the termination of a strategic alliance with that team. This alliance had begun in October 2023 and its dissolution was a significant blow to both parties.
Additionally, Canapino faced criticism and conflicts on social media. Callum Ilott, a former teammate, shared experiences of social media abuse due to confrontations with Canapino. These incidents, along with other issues within the team, contributed to a challenging season for the Argentine driver.
Despite the challenges, Canapino returned to competition after his absence, but failed to achieve good results. His last five races were particularly difficult, with final positions below 18th place. His last participation was in Toronto, where a collision with Scott Dixon prematurely ended his race.
In total, Canapino participated in 28 races with Juncos Hollinger Racing, achieving his best result four times with a 12th place. It has not yet been announced who will replace him for the remaining five races of the 2024 IndyCar season.
The team concluded their statement with words of encouragement and gratitude towards Canapino: "Thank you, Agustín, for your time with us. We wish you the best in your future projects."
