Juan Pablo Montoya will return to the NASCAR Cup Series driving the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota Camry for 23XI Racing. This event, taking place at Watkins Glen International on September 15, marks the final race of the year for this car, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Mobil 1.
Mobil 1's 50th Anniversary Celebration
The anniversary celebration began in March at the Circuit of the Americas with Kamui Kobayashi and continued in June at Nashville Superspeedway with Corey Heim. Now, Montoya, who competed in NASCAR from 2007 to 2013, will close out this event. In addition to his NASCAR experience, Montoya has competed in Formula One, CART, IndyCar, and IMSA, winning championships in CART (1999) and IMSA (2019).
Montoya expressed his excitement about returning to NASCAR and racing at Watkins Glen: "It is an honor to celebrate Mobil 1's legacy in racing and be recognized for my contributions to motorsport. Mobil 1 was one of my first sponsors when I started racing, so representing them in this anniversary is special. I'm also excited to work with 23XI and see what the team has built."
Montoya's Track Record at Watkins Glen
Montoya has had a notable performance at Watkins Glen throughout his NASCAR career. In total, he has competed in seven NASCAR Cup Series races at this circuit, securing one win in 2010, three top-five finishes, and five top-ten finishes. Additionally, he has earned one pole position and led a total of 82 laps on this track.
Since his last NASCAR race in 2014 with Team Penske, Montoya has continued to compete in various categories. He returned to the IndyCar Series with Team Penske between 2014 and 2016, achieving five victories. He has also competed in IMSA, winning the prototype championship in 2019 alongside his teammate Dane Cameron. Internationally, he has participated in the World Endurance Championship and events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Additionally, Montoya is involved in the career development of his son Sebastián, who competes in Formula 4 in Europe.
