Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein secured the 2023/24 Formula E drivers' championship after a drama-filled race in London, where Jaguar TCS Racing drivers Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy saw their hopes fade.
Season 10 of Formula E concluded with three drivers in the title fight, separated by only seven points. Pascal Wehrlein, Mitch Evans, and Nick Cassidy entered the final race with a chance to win the championship. The GEN3 closed its era with one of the most intense races in the competition's history.
Nick Cassidy, who had a problematic performance in Portland and difficulties in Saturday's qualifying in London, managed to recover from 15th place to finish seventh in the first race. In the second race, he started from pole and led initially, while his teammate Evans overtook Maximilian Guenther to move into second place.
After an early Safety Car, Wehrlein overtook Guenther, positioning himself among the three title contenders. Jaguar's strategy seemed solid, but problems began to arise when Cassidy activated his ATTACK MODE, allowing Wehrlein and Evans to overtake him.
On lap 29, Oliver Rowland passed Cassidy for third place, causing contact with Guenther that ended Cassidy's race due to a puncture. The fight narrowed down to two drivers. Evans and Wehrlein failed in their initial attempts to activate ATTACK MODE, allowing Rowland to take the lead. However, having made the pass under Safety Car conditions, Rowland had to relinquish the lead to Evans.
Evans eventually activated his ATTACK MODE correctly, but Wehrlein quickly overtook him, securing the lead in the championship. Rowland won the race, followed by Wehrlein, who with this result was crowned world champion for the first time. Evans finished third in the race and in the championship, while Cassidy was third in the overall standings.
Jaguar TCS Racing won the teams' championship, their first top-level motorsport title since 1991, while Porsche took the manufacturers' trophy.
